Home Economics/Health & Social Care Technician


Job description

To provide proactive support and assistance to teaching staff in all aspects of the delivery of the Northern Ireland Common Curriculum for Home Economics/Health & Social Care. To enhance and enrich the learning experience of pupils and ensure that the aims and objectives of the School are achieved in a manner that meets the needs of individual pupils, promotes a positive image of the School, reflects good practice in teaching and learning, and complies with all relevant health and safety standards and regulations. .

Responsibilities

  • Prepare/organise classrooms and support teachers before and during practical classes and practical examinations
  • Set out equipment and materials for class use and remove same when class is complete
  • Collect, clean and store equipment and materials in designated storage areas. Ensure items are maintained in a state of 'ready for use'
  • Dispose of used materials in a safe and approved manner
  • Maintain inventory of departmental resources/materials/equipment
  • Ensure that mandatory and/or statutory checks of materials/equipment are carried out
  • Inform Head of Department of materials and equipment found to be in an unsatisfactory/unsafe condition and arrange for repair/quotations for replacements/disposal of such items
  • Check orders of materials/equipment when received
  • Ensure no unauthorised person has unsupervised access to equipment and materials when not in use
  • Advise on health and safety issues in relation to the use of equipment
  • Other duties as assigned by Head of Department/Line Manager

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • A minimum of 5 GCSEs
  • Health and Safety accreditation (pending)
  • High level of ICT competency skills

Desirable Skills

  • A Level qualification or 3rd level qualification or equivalent in HE related subject area
  • Experience in technicians environment/school based schedule
  • Experience organising stores/equipment on excel spreadsheet
  • High order communication skills
  • Ability to demonstrate experiences of good working relationships
  • Ability to work as part of a team
