Assistant Curator


Job description

The post holder will be responsible for drafting and implementing museum policies and plans to adhere to Museum Accreditation standards and will implement all policies and plans relating to the acquisition, care, security, conservation, documentation, storage, display of the museum collection. .

Responsibilities

  • To support the Museum Curator in providing a high-quality museum service and be responsible for the building, staff, managing and developing the collection and museum environment and resources on a day to day basis
  • They will be responsible for managing the preparation and installation of museum exhibitions and interpretation and seeking appropriate grants to support museum services, particularly regarding access and interpretation of collections
  • They will manage an enquiry and information service for the museum, delegating as required.
  • To act as Duty Officer, taking full charge of the Museum as required.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Relevant degree e.g. Archaeology, History, Geography
  • At least 2 years relevant work experience in all of the following areas: Managing a collection within a museum/gallery setting
  • At least 2 years relevant work experience in all of the following areas: Exhibition research, interpretation and development
  • At least 2 years relevant work experience in all of the following areas: Direct line management of contracted employees
  • At least 2 years relevant work experience in all of the following areas: Building Management experience in a museum, gallery or archive
  • At least 2 years relevant work experience in all of the following areas: Management of budgets
  • At least 1 years experience of collection care and collection management procedures
  • Previous experience of leading a team
  • Experience of using a Collections Management database in a Museum, archive or heritage context
  • Experience of writing reports and articles for publications
  • Be able to demonstrate competence in use of Microsoft office applications including email, spreadsheets and databases
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to plan and prioritise a range of tasks.
  • Be available to cover Duty Officer duties outside normal office hours including evenings/ weekends and bank/public holidays when required
  • Hold a full current driving licence and access to transport, or access to transport to meet the requirements of the post.
