Trainee Clinical Scientist (STP Training Route)
Job description
The post holder will undertake a formal programme of training specialising in Clinical Biochemistry, as detailed in the NHS Scientist Training Programme (STP), leading to HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist. The trainee will work closely with senior members of staff to complete all aspects of the training curriculum. The successful candidate will be responsible for their own progression through the training programme, for completing the learning outcomes as outlined in the training programme, progressing through a mixture of work based competence and experience in BHSCT scientific departments and undertaking the complementary academic master’s programme at the designated Higher Education Institution. Assessment of progress and competence will take place every year and continuation to completion will depend on satisfactory assessment. The post holder will be expected to undertake a range of demanding scientific and clinical duties, initially under supervision, as well as occasional duties in response to specific elements of the curriculum. These duties will involve: sample reception, sample analysis, result verification, result reporting, liaison with clinical and scientific staff, clinical and laboratory audit, assistance with training and research. The post-holder will also be expected to undertake mandatory training as deemed necessary by their host department. At all times the trainee Clinical Scientist is expected to work within standard operating policies and procedures of the BHSCT and adhere to high standards of professionalism, health and safety, risk reduction, confidentiality, patient care and dignity, and respect for equality and diversity. Responsibilities
- Will be required to supervise the reception, data entry and processing of samples received in the laboratory.
- Will co-ordinate with the section head in assessing the appropriateness of test assignments for each sample received.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- Applicants must have a degree (1st or 2:1) relevant to clinical biochemistry (biochemistry, biomedical sciences, biology, genetics, microbiology). Relevant 2.2 degree will also be considered if they have a post-graduate degree.
- Computer literate (Microsoft Office Packages)
