Outdoor Activities Manager


Job description

To manage the activity department at Lorne Estate ensuring the safe delivery of high quality and fun adventurous activities which meet the needs of our customers. To manage, recruit, train and monitor a team of activity instructors. To provide strong leadership to our activity team. To ensure the activity department is operated efficiently and economically and all health and safety requirements are met and exceeded. To maintain personal outdoor qualifications and training for all activities offered by Lorne Estate and to be an exemplar in instruction to all groups participating. To assess staffing needs in conjunction with the Operations Manager and recruit accordingly. To effectively and efficiently allocate the day to day work of the activity instructors including preparing monthly rota and daily schedules. To plan, co-ordinate and deliver training sessions in line with agreed objectives and consistent with industry standards ensuring appropriate records are kept up to date. To conduct internal assessments and regular monitoring of activity instructors and in line with agreed standards. To ensure the highest safety standards are maintained at all times and to conduct and update risk assessments. To liaise with the appropriate technical advisers to ensure that Lorne Estate complies with all technical requirements and Adventuremark standards and to prepare documentation for inspection. To plan appropriate programmes of outdoor activities for groups and schools, usually in conjunction with teachers or group leaders. To manage the budget for the activity department ensuring efficient use of resources. To be responsible for the purchase, maintenance and routine checks of all outdoor activity equipment and facilities in line with industry standards and to ensure appropriate records are kept. To develop new outdoor programmes, holiday schemes and activities in conjunction with the Operations Manager. To co-ordinate the operation of the campsites including the site wardens and camping equipment. To operate online booking systems to check numbers and availability, create bookings, invoices and take payments where required. To deliver a customer focused service to all users of the centre to ensure customer satisfaction and increase opportunity of securing repeat bookings. To deal with telephone enquiries, respond appropriately and ensure follow up where necessary. To take action if any situations arise by providing emergency cover via 2-way radio during activity sessions on site. To deal with queries, problems and complaints of guests and take prompt action to ensure a solution is found. To act as on-site first aider and manage an efficient incident reporting system. Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • 5 GCSEs or equivalent including Maths and English
  • Relevant outdoor activity qualifications, at least 2 of the following ML, Archery GB instructor Awards, CWA or ERCA Instructor
  • At least 3 years experience of working as an Outdoor Activity Instructor
  • Experience of supervising activities
  • Experience of leading a team

Desirable Skills

  • Current first aid qualification Operational Inspection Course
  • Knowledge of Girlguiding and an understanding of its ethos
