Job description
The Deputy Costume Supervisor will provide support to the Costume Supervisor in all aspects of production within the Costume Department for all in-house productions, visiting productions, education, and community activities. The deputy supervisor will work alongside the supervisor and help manage show budgets and expenditure, casual and fixed term staff. They will also be involved in sourcing and making costumes and offer support front/backstage during technical rehearsals..
Responsibilities
- Assist the Costume Supervisor with the planning of staff requirements to make any necessary appointments to meet the needs of the theatre programme and production schedules within agreed budgets
- Working closely with creative teams to realise their designs and compositions maximising the use of the theatres available resources
- Planning and supervising all aspects of wardrobe in conjunction with the Costume Supervisor, including buying and manufacturing of costumes, the upkeep and maintenance of costumes as well as taking part in the physical running of productions
- Liaising with visiting companies or producers to ensure that visits to the Lyric are successfully supported, including the smooth get-in, running and get-out of shows and delivering a high standard of customer service
- Ensuring the effective running of all wardrobe facilities including the cutting room, laundry, and costume stores
- Department administration, including credit card and petty cash reconciliations
- Working in conjunction with the other production department and programming staff to co-ordinate any planned tours or transfers by the theatre
- Liaising with other departments in respect of maintenance of Theatre equipment e.g., Theatre Drape stock, etc
- Developing and training casual costume staff or apprentices
- Promoting a commitment from the costume team to high levels of technical excellence, flexibility, and customer service
- Attending and contributing to production meeting and management meetings
- Contribute to the development of the health and safety policy and the development of safe and efficient systems of working
- Keeping abreast of current developments in health and safety and ensuring compliance with the requirements of the Theatres Health & Safety Policy
- Ensuring the maintenance and safety of all working areas and implementing best practice across the department
- Assisting in the setting up of the Lyrics costume hire activities and subsequently managing the day to day running
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- Qualification in Theatrical Costume or associated courses e.g., Fashion, Textiles etc
- At least 1 year experience in a supervisory role
- Good hand and machine sewing skills
- Excellent personal time management
- Excellent organisation and communication skills, written and verbal
- Demonstrate ability to work with creative and technical personnel and performers
- Ability to work under pressure, using tact, diplomacy and flexibility
- At least 1 years administration experience including use of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel & Office) and data input
Desirable Skills
- Experience as a Multi-disciplinary costume maker
- Practical skills in pattern cutting and dress making
- Full Driving License with own method of Transport
- Basic Wig Maintenance
- Knowledge of machine maintenance
