Consultant General Surgeon
Job description
This recruitment campaign is, at the outset, to recruit 4.0 wte Consultant General Surgeons for Trust-wide positions based in Altnagelvin Hospital. The general surgical service is currently undergoing review and reorganisation as part of the wider Regional Review of General Surgical Services. It would be expected that candidates would be willing to participate in this and work across the Trust as required as this progresses towards completion..
Responsibilities
- To share in the collective responsibility for the provision of Surgical Services for patients within the General Surgery specialty
- To provide senior decision making within the General Surgical Team
- To contribute to the development in excellence in clinical practice through research, audit and undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
- These posts are full time positions and it is anticipated that work allocation will be split across the two Acute hospital sites with unscheduled and complex surgeries on the Altnagelvin site and straight forward elective being performed at the SWAH
- All 4 positions are 10 PA jobs with additional PA's available for training, education/ specialist activities (to be determined upon appointment)
- The Trust would wish to offer all candidates opportunity to specialise in their preferred specialism. Every effort will be made to ensure these opportunities are available
- Mentorship is available if required from colleagues within the team or regionally if not available locally. It would also be expected that experienced candidates would be willing to mentor junior colleagues
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- Must hold or be eligible for full GMC Registration and licence to practice
- Applicants must be on or be eligible to be on the GMC Specialist Register for General Surgery via:- CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview date) CESR or European Community Rights
- Experience in general and emergency surgery
- Evidence of QI Projects
- Hold a current full driving licence which is valid for use in the UK and have access to a car on appointment. This criteria will be waived in the case of applicants whose disability prohibits driving but who have access to an form of transport
Desirable Skills
- Higher Qualifications e.g. MD, PhD
- Up to date ATLS/European Trauma Course or equivalent
- JAG Accredited in upper/lower or both endoscopy
- Research/Publications
- Fellowship training in upper or lower GI surgery (completed or planned)
- Special Interest in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery
