Job description

Communications Systems Operators/Network Engineers are the backbone of the Royal Signals. They work in any environment, no matter how tough. Their role is to operate mobile communication systems across the battlefield. There are at least 1-2 training weekend events per month that you can volunteer to deploy on. Training weekends are diverse, the focus could be on our soldiering skills, communication trade skills, a combination of both or adventure training. E.g., Climbing/abseiling, skiing, water sports etc. Opportunities exist to take part in almost any sport that appeals to you from Skydiving to football and many more besides. Responsibilities

  • Become an expert in operating a multitude of Information Systems and Services, including radios, satellites, computer networks and applications.
  • Get continuous professional development, from a Level 3 NVQ in ICT and civilian accredited training up to a Bachelor of Science Degree.
  • Learn how to drive and operate the vehicles that communications equipment is transported in, including HGVs and Armoured vehicles.
  • Access a wealth of specialisations, including Airborne Forces, Special Forces, Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Cyber Operations.
  • If you excel, you can undergo fast track promotion to Staff Sergeant, undertake a degree course and become a manager of complex communication systems.

To apply email your CV to the employer. Location: Clonaver Park Army Reserves Centre. Work time: 19:30 - 21:30 Tuesday Evenings, once training passed there will be opportunities for weekend work. You will be required to complete Basic Training to become a Soldier first, you will then go on and complete your trade training The Training does vary and is broken down into MOD1 (1 Weekend), MOD2 (1 week or 4x weekends), MOD3 (2 weeks), and then Phase 2 - Trade Training (2 weeks). You'll get paid a day rate according to your rank, starting from £40.13 in training and rising to £51.22 per day once you're a Private. This includes being paid for weekly drill nights. Plus, if you complete all of your annual training days, you're entitled to a tax-free lump sum called a bounty. Step 1 Basic training teaches you how to be a soldier. You will learn how to survive outdoors, fire different weapon systems, fight on the modern battlefield as well as developing key life skills. Step 2 Next, you learn the specialist skills you need for your role in Phase 2 with your paired Reserve unit, and at the Royal School of Signals. This happens mostly in the evenings and at weekends, with a 15-day continuous training period once a year. Once complete you will be fully integrated in an active deployable Reserve unit and be on a career path to become a communications expert.
