Job description

Eastern Region maintains and protects the river drainage network across Armagh, Lisburn and Greater Belfast Areas. Western Region maintains and protects the river drainage network across Omagh and Coleraine Areas plus the Fermanagh Sub-Area. Carrying out a wide range of construction related manual skilled tasks, associated with Rivers Agencys operational business needs as directed by line management.

Responsibilities

  • Implementation of all Health and Safety measures as directed by the Area Engineer or supervisory staff;
  • Ensuring accurate completion of weekly Time Sheets, Plant Logs and other relevant documentation;
  • Using power tools and hand tools in the workshop and onsite, including the care and security of all plant, tools and equipment under your control. Also the repair of various hand tools as necessary;
  • Driving of Departmental vehicles in Northern Ireland including the transportation of equipment to and from the work site and responsibility for the care and security of Departmental vehicles;
  • Response to call out during flood emergency as and when required and outside normal working hours;
  • Concrete works such as placing, levelling and finishing concrete surface;
  • Setting up shuttering and form work on site associated with drainage works;
  • Reinforcement steel fixing;
  • Building works such as headwalls, chamber and the like associated with drainage works;
  • Providing approximate quantities for materials required for works;
  • Fencing, including timber fencing and gates;
  • The undertaking of training, to enhance efficiency and flexibility, in consultation with supervisory staff;
  • Manual labouring duties associated with watercourse maintenance, such as maintenance of watercourses with hand tools, bush and tree cutting, grass cutting, fence repairs etc. and
  • Consultation as necessary with members of the public
  • The key responsibilities listed are not exhaustive but give a good indication of the main duties of the post. The emphasis on particular duties may vary over time according to business needs.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • A minimum of 2 years experience in drainage and associated works to include at least 5 of the following: pipe laying, shuttering, fencing, trench supports, backfilling, concreting, block laying and flagging/kerbing.
  • And, A full valid driving licence which permits the licence holder to drive in Northern Ireland.
  • And, A permanent residence within 35 miles travelling distance by public road to the geographical location specific to the post, as measured by RAC Route Planner from full postcode to full postcode via the shortest route selection.
