Job description
Waterways Ireland wishes to recruit a person to carry out lock operations on the Lower Bann Navigation. The successful applicant will assist waterway users in lock passages, collect tolls, carry out essential operational maintenance functions and be the public interface for Waterways Ireland. There may be some occasional duties involving communication with visitors including practical demonstration of lock operation. The post is primarily based at Toome Lock, but is a mobile post covering duties along the length of the navigation. The primary location is subject to change depending on business needs. Responsibilities
- Manual operation of traditional lock gates and sluices to enable vessels to pass through locks
- To respond to customer requests for lock passage in a timely manner and manage the efficient passage of craft through locks by directing boaters and handling mooring lines as and when required
- Collection of tolls / cash handling and issuing written receipts
- To report to the supervisor on all works, conditions of site, safety and security of each facility
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- Construction Skills Register (CSR) card, or equivalent
- Possess full, valid driving licence
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Good numeracy and literacy skills
- Recent working experience of maintaining structures / buildings / outdoor facilities
