WHSCT Advanced Physiotherapy Practitioner; Acute In-Patients Service Band 7. While supporting the delivery of a highly specialist physiotherapy service as an integral member of the Acute Inpatient physiotherapy team, the post holder will be part of a team that assists in the day-to-day co-ordination and management of patient flow throughout South West Acute Hospital. The band 7 will be required to support the wider service in dealing with the range of problems that may be experienced by patients in the acute hospital setting. You will take a lead role in identifying and implementing the physiotherapeutic aspects of care that should be incorporated in new working practices and patient care pathways with the overall aim of optimising patient flow through the acute hospital. This will involve the delivery of an efficient, effective service to referred patients who are subject to; respiratory, mobility, neurological, and pain management problems. Appropriate assessment and evolving individual treatment plans for complex acute inpatients due to the range of co-morbidities will require breadth and depth of knowledge and skills in specialised assessment and treatment. The post holder will act as a highly specialist advisor to other professional staff and liaise with physiotherapists from other teams in relation to patient care and management; bringing professional expertise to the team with regard to management of the physical aspects of musculoskeletal-orthopaedic, cardio-respiratory and neurological impairments suffered by patients admitted to the hospital. Undergraduate students are also supported and instructed within this team while on clinical placement. The post holder will work as part of a multi-professional team to provide an intensive treatment program for each referred patient. This may occur in HPSS/community facilities or in the patients/carers home environment. The post holder will at times be required to work independently in these environments. They will be required to liaise with colleagues (multidisciplinary) from the acute, community and intermediate care sectors. They will take a major role in the advanced assessment and treatment of patients within this speciality who may have complex and/or chronic presentation with/without palliative care needs, determine clinical diagnosis; physiotherapy treatment indicated and maintain records as an autonomous practitioner. They, in conjunction with their Senior colleagues and Principal Physiotherapist, will assist the Head of Physiotherapy Services in review, development, planning and co-ordination of the service as deemed necessary to meet objectives.

  • To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instructions to relatives, carers and other professionals, to promote understanding of the aims of physiotherapy, and to ensure a consistent approach to patient care.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 5 years post-registration clinical experience.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience at B6 level or equivalent in the assessment and treatment of patients in the acute phase of their care with cardio-pulmonary, orthopaedic-locomotor and adult neurological conditions and disabilities.
  • Experience in the day-to-day management and supervision of professional and non-professional staff.
  • Completion of a minimum of one MSc Module in Physiotherapy Practice relevant to the acute inpatient or equivalent.
