Equine Care and EFI Assistant


Job description

Equine Care and EFI Assistants will be working alongside the core staff team and senior volunteers within the charity, providing essential aid with regards to general yard work, Equine care and assisting with Equine facilitated interactions with members of the public. Helping the sanctuary by providing a home to animals in need and a safe place for members of the public to work with them and learn about animals and what their needs are. Responsibilities

  • To work on the yard. This may include feeding, grooming and mucking out, moving equines, handling of equines and general animal health checks.
  • To provide high quality care that ensures all equines have access to suitable water, feed and shelter and to ensure that hygiene is maintained.
  • To ensure stables/shelters are mucked out thoroughly, water receptacles are clean and refilled, hay nets filled and weighed.
  • To give a visual health check to the equines including lameness before all interactions with general public, visitors and clients. To inform senior staff of equine ailments and needs.
  • To ensure paddocks are checked for hazards and kept clean.
  • The catching and holding of horses for both general equine care requirements and for EFI led activities.
  • The grooming, trimming and bathing of equines with the application and checking of rugs.
  • Transporting of equines safely as an assistant.
  • General use of tack and equine handling equipment.
  • To understand the importance of effective communication, observation and unified team work.
  • To assist with briefing and debriefing of EFI clients. To assist with the organisation and preparation of the required sanctuary spaces for each activity.
  • To be an effective member of the team.
  • To ensure that the visitor experience is always positive.
  • To interact in a welcoming, informative and professional manner with visitors.
  • To be knowledgeable on the various schemes and programmes run at the sanctuary and to be able to relay this to visitors.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Able to take instruction and work independently on the yard.
  • Timekeeping skills are essential for the yard.
  • Able to work and communicate with the team.

Desirable Skills

  • Equine experience is desirable.
  • Animal handling experience.
  • Experience working with the public on a customer service level.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Recordkeeping.
  • We will aid in your education of equine care and other animals. The work can be hard but is extremely rewarding.

Further Information

The Employer is: CROSSKENNAN LANE ANIMAL SANCTUARY. Salary: 16/17 £5.28, 18/20 £7.49, 21/22 £10.18, 23/24 £10.42 per hour. Although this is a part-time temporary opportunity, hours may be extended and it could lead to a permanent position. The job advert may end before the closing date if requested by the employer.
