Ulster-Scots Production Trainee


Job description

Working with the Northern Visions Production team, you will assist in the production of various programmes that meet the needs of the Ulster-Scots community. The completed programmes will be broadcast on our channel NVTV, on channel 7 on Freeview and 159 on Virgin Media. They will also be available online through our streaming service and on-demand. As a Production Trainee you will be given training and a mentor to guide you into the production process. The role will include work in pre-production, production and post-production..

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the Northern Visions Production team with the collection, verification and analysis of information about events relating to the Ulster-Scots community in Northern Ireland.
  • Assisting in the generation of content from a wide range of subjects, sourcing new contributors and new ideas, conducting research to a broad brief, exercising editorial judgment and adhering to legal and Ofcom guidelines.
  • Attending planning meetings and offering story ideas.
  • Carrying out research, writing material for scripts bulletins and links.
  • Exercising editorial judgement, maintaining professional journalistic standards and adhering to Ofcom policy and legal and contractual guidelines.
  • Assisting with interviews and reporting duties, in both recorded and live situations, in a studio or on location.
  • Self-operating camera and sound recording equipment on location and studio equipment at Northern Visions.
  • Undertaking post-production by editing material for broadcast.
  • On occasion, to provide briefings and written reports for other staff, community groups, participants and contributors.
  • To assist in the preparation of reports, forms, evaluations and requests, needs assessment and statistical data.
  • To be willing to work some weekends and evenings.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Knowledge of the Ulster-Scots community in Northern Ireland.
  • Excellent command of the English language, both spoken and written is essential.
  • Interpersonal skills and good communication abilities are essential as the position requires interaction with the public by phone and email.
  • The ability to engage people in conversation is important as well, in addition to a good working knowledge of Belfast and a knowledge and understanding of the Ulster-Scots community in Northern Ireland.
  • The ability to use office equipment such as phone systems and computers.
  • A creative self-starter and ability to work in a team. Ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines.
  • Diplomacy and sensitivity when working with members of the public with excellent interpersonal skills at all levels and an ability to build a rapport with interviewees without losing objectivity.
  • Knowledge of the current relevant legislation, regulations and associated procedures including Libel and Contempt, Copyright, Data Protection, Public Liability, Health & Safety etc. and how to comply with regulatory requirements.
  • Educational and experience requirements.
  • Candidates must demonstrate an excellent command of the English language. We prefer A-level English Language or equivalent.

Desirable Skills

  • Third level qualification in Journalism is desirable.
  • Experience of one of the following digital camera (moving image) and/or editing of visual material is desirable.
  • A full clean driving licence is desirable.

Further Information

The Employer is: ULSTER-SCOTS PRODUCTION TRAINEE. Salary: 16/17 £5.28, 18/20 £7.49, 21/22 £10.18, 23/24 £10.42 per hour. Although this is a part-time temporary opportunity, hours may be extended and it could lead to a permanent position. The job advert may end before the closing date if requested by the employer.
