Job description

The Employer is: HIVE CANCER SUPPORT. Through internal and external training you will work alongside the Development Officer to Activate people to seek intervention earlier. Develop awareness of signs and symptoms of cancer. Engage the hard-to-reach communities. Facilitate a smooth pathway into medical care/support. Localise national cancer campaigns and make relevant to our local areas. Be part of the bridge between communities and Primary Care. The role will complement the existing Cancer Awareness and prevention programme ensuring services are directed and promoted to those areas most in need e.g., areas of high deprivation, high rates of emergency presentations of cancer and low screening rates. Deliver a range of community-facing cancer awareness sessions, campaigns & interventions. Work with the team across Derry and Strabane District council. Work closely with key partners in the tackling ongoing Health Inequalities Use evidence-based approaches to reach target communities; not a one-size-fits-all approach. Keep up to date with current health promotion trends and campaigns Produce monthly reports. Target interventions toward the most deprived communities and other communities of health inequality. Target interventions toward younger people, increasing their own awareness of signs and symptoms of cancer and encouraging them to present for cancer screening. Support the increase in uptake of breast screening in ethnically diverse populations Actively engage with residents, community groups, and local stakeholders to understand their needs, concerns, and aspirations. Contribute to the planning and execution of community events, workshops, and activities. Advocate for the interests of the community, collaborating with local authorities, government agencies, and other organizations to address community challenges and facilitate positive change. Networking: Build and maintain effective relationships with local businesses, educational institutions, and social service providers to enhance the community's access to resources and opportunities. Documentation and Reporting: Keep accurate records of community initiatives, events, and outreach efforts. Support educational initiatives within the community, helping to facilitate workshops and training sessions. Personal Professional Development: Actively participate in training programs and workshops to enhance skills and knowledge in community development, social skills. Ability to work flexible hours to meet the requirements of the role. The job holder will carry out any other duties as may be reasonably required by the line manager. .

Responsibilities

  • The Trainee Community Development Worker will play a vital role in supporting the Hive Cancer Support in raising awareness of early detection of Cancer can save lives. This will contribute to community well-being and fostering positive social change.

  • You will be part of a team who deliver key cancer-related health messages through a variety of methods, using evidence-based approaches to reach target areas/communities.
  • By working with and through communities you will identify and breakdown barriers to accessing unique community based intervention services.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • English and Maths at GCSE (or equivalent) at grade C or above.
  • Full driving license/own car.
  • Working to a timetable that may change day-to-day.
  • Willing to Experience working in a community setting.
  • Willing to work within a setting which offers opportunities around behaviour change.
  • A good level of IT skills.
  • Good communication skills listening and verbal.
  • Work to deadlines, prioritising work appropriately.
  • Work flexibly, moving from one type of task to another within the same working day.
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills (especially active listening).
  • Positive about working as part of a team and in cooperation with colleagues in other teams.
  • Committed to equal opportunities.

Further Information

The Employer is: HIVE CANCER SUPPORT. Although this is a part-time temporary opportunity, hours may be extended, and it could lead to a permanent position. The job advert may end before the closing date if requested by the employer.
