Job description

Nextdoor Nature supports communities in South and East Belfast to take action for wildlife. Our People, Our Place engages people of all ages in work around our Bog Meadows Nature Reserve in West Belfast. The community engagement team also look after Ulster Wildlife’s Youth Forum, organising trips and activities. Assist with preparation for and delivery of nature based activity sessions and practical nature conservation work. Assist with promoting environmental engagement opportunities with youth and community groups..

Responsibilities

  • Assist with preparation for and delivery of nature based activity sessions and practical nature conservation work.
  • Assist with promoting environmental engagement opportunities with youth and community groups.
  • To ensure compliance with statutory and funding requirements while undertaking duties.
  • To take proper care of all equipment and resources and to ensure that these are left safe, tidy, clean and secure when not in use, including buildings.
  • To assist with equipment and resources inventories.
  • Assist with the delivery of public events and education / youth programmes and any other community engagement activities.
  • Assist with the promotion of Ulster Wildlife's Community Engagement Work via communication channels.
  • Comply with all health and safety requirements and report any issues.
  • Assist in undertaking a range of health and safety checks for work activities.
  • Maintain and update all relevant records as necessary.
  • Adhere to the policies and practices of Ulster Wildlife at all times and respect the policies and practices of project partners.
  • Play an active role in fundraising for Ulster Wildlife e.g. through promoting membership.
  • Identify and implement Learning & Development processes.
  • Co-operate with and support volunteers and where appropriate supervise them.
  • Participate in staff meetings.
  • Ensure that contact with others is of a style and quality consistent with Ulster Wildlife's ethos.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • A passion for working with people on programmes about, in and for the natural environment.
  • A willingness and desire to learn new skills, welcome supervision and advice.
  • An ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people.
  • The ability to work outdoors in all seasons, learning skills in a 'hands-on' practical manner.
  • The ability to work as part of a team.
  • Flexibility in your schedule to attend training courses, workshops or events.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience of working or volunteering in the nature conservation, education or youth work sectors gained within the last two years.
  • The skills and confidence to capture and share your experiences either in writing in a blog / diary or by photograph and video.

Further Information

The Employer is: ULSTER WILDLIFE. Salary: 16-17 £6.40, 18-20 £8.60, 21 plus £11.44 per hour. Although this is a part-time temporary opportunity, hours may be extended and it could lead to a permanent position. The job advert may end before the closing date if requested by the employer. Ulster Wildlife has a long track-record of working with children, young people and adults engaging them with the natural world. We have three significant community engagement programmes running at present: Wild Youth aims to empower young people from disadvantaged communities in North and West Belfast to connect with nature, improve their health and wellbeing and gain practical skills in outdoor education. What you can expect: To work alongside Ulster Wildlife staff in developing and delivering community engagement activity sessions. Avail of courses that will prepare you for a career in nature based community engagement work. Get an opportunity to learn environmental education and community engagement skills and techniques from Ulster Wildlife staff. Receive full support during the six months from a dedicated line manager, who will develop a training plan based on personal learning needs.
