Job description

Access Employment Ltd (AEL) is a limited company with charitable status providing training and support to enable people with disadvantages, particularly those with learning disabilities to fulfil their work potential. AEL are seeking a Garden Centre Assistant. As an integral part of the team you will work in all areas of the garden centre assisting with serving customers, creating displays and ensuring all plants and shrubs are properly and healthily maintained. Flexibility in working hours is required as the garden centre is open on weekends in spring, summer and on certain bank holidays but is closed on weekends in the late autumn and winter months..

Responsibilities

  • To assist with the daily operations of AEL's garden centre including serving customers, creating displays and ensuring all plants and shrubs are properly and healthily maintained.
  • To assist with training, coaching and skill development and to undertake personal development as is reasonably required to assist with the effective delivery of your job.
  • To be aware of trainee's individual needs and abilities.
  • Be able to listen to and follow instructions given by line managers.
  • To ensure work tasks are planned, set and completed on time in a cost-effective manner.
  • To ensure minimal product rework or rejection and ensure high quality control standards are maintained.
  • Deal with any day-to-day problems in the work area as they happen and seek help from line managers if needed.
  • To ensure that the production area and office spaces are well maintained at all times, conducive to a safe and productive work environment.
  • Ability to cover for colleagues during absences.
  • Any other relevant duties commensurate with the role and responsibilities of the post as required by management.
  • Maintain a good standard of working practice, setting example to others and maintaining good working relations with the senior management team, staff, trainees, suppliers, customers, partners and stakeholders.
  • Represent the ethos and values of AEL to the outside world, acting as a role model and mentor to other staff, volunteers, trainees and clients.
  • Comply with and promote all of AEL's policies and procedures.
  • Uphold confidentiality at all times regarding AEL's trainees and business activities.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Ability to follow and understand verbal and written work instructions as per requirements of the role.
  • Ability to perform basic numeracy tasks in order to perform the duties of the role.
  • Ability to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • You will have a 'right first time' approach and a can-do attitude.
  • Good communication skills and able to work as part of a team.
  • Good time management.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Must be fully flexible with working hours to suit the needs of the business.

Desirable Skills

  • Qualification or previous experience in horticulture.
  • Production/manufacturing experience.
  • Experience of working within a social firm.
  • Experience and good knowledge of IT and database systems including the ability to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), internet and email.
  • Knowledge and experience of working with individuals with learning disabilities and the barriers they face.
  • Awareness of the current safeguarding legislation.

Further Information

The Employer is: ACCESS EMPLOYMENT LTD Although this is a part-time temporary opportunity, hours may be extended and it could lead to a permanent position. The job advert may end before the closing date if requested by the employer. Salary: 16/17 £6.40, 18/20yrs £8.60, 21yrs or over £11.44 per hour
