Job description

Skilled Operative working as part of the Waterways Ireland maintenance team for the Ulster Canal and the Erne Navigation. Working as a member of a small team engaged in the maintenance and development of the waterway, including works to the navigation channel, navigation markers, signage, banks, mooring and public amenity facilities..

Responsibilities

  • Working as a member of a small team engaged in the maintenance and development of the waterway, including works to the navigation channel, navigation markers, signage, banks, mooring and public amenity facilities.
  • Working on civil engineering construction projects both in a water-based environment involving frequent working on/from boats and other specialist floating plant, and in areas in close proximity to deep and potentially fast flowing water.
  • The operation of various types of specialist plant (e.g. hydraulic excavators, dumpers & work boat) and their attachments as required to carry out maintenance and associated works to the waterway.
  • Maintenance and development of Waterways Ireland grounds and facilities including grass cutting, strimming, spraying weeds and cutting/trimming trees.
  • Working as banksman/slinger.
  • Operation of light equipment and machinery such as chainsaws, lawnmowers, pole saws, strimmers, and power washers.
  • Setting out buoyed off areas from a work boat.
  • The implementation of Health and Safety measures including the lone working system as directed by management.
  • Completion of daily plant logs and the inspection pro-forma.
  • Assisting other skilled operatives, for example in the refurbishment of jetties, building revetment walls and general maintenance of waterways facilities.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • A minimum of 3 years experience gained in the last 5 years operating plant (e.g. hydraulic excavators, dumper, work boat) within a construction or water-based setting, as deemed relevant by the Panel.
  • A full current driving licence and access to a form of transport which will permit the candidate to meet the requirements of the post in full.
