Trainee Youth Worker


Job description

The employer is: ST PETERS IMMACULATA YOUTH CLUB. The Trainee Youth Support Worker will be part of St. Peters Immaculata Youth Work Team and will assist the Senior Youth Worker to ensure the successful facilitation and coordination of youth work services across the Lower Falls for young people aged 7-25 years of ages; focused on the following areas: Lower Falls, Clonard/ Lower Springfield & Grosvenor. The worker will train as part of a team to deliver on the implementation of all youth work methodologies involving a range of voluntary sector youth partners across the Lower Falls area and will be responsible for coordinating a bespoke and tailored youth work response, in partnership with a number of key statutory agencies including other youth organisations, Social services, NGOs, PSNI, Department for Health etc. The Trainee Support Worker will assist the coordinator in the day-to-day delivery of youth work including street work, specialist interventions, general supervision and support and maximising the use of other support staff for agreed purposes, in line with key legislation in this regard. The Trainee Youth Support Worker will have responsibility for the development of youth work initiatives with young people and other agencies at local community level..

Responsibilities

  • To identify, prioritise and deliver a programme of youth support interventions across Lower Falls, based on assessed and emerging needs in the designated areas.
  • To provide leadership and support for other communities , from a range of partner organisations, who are involved in facilitating youth support work, across Lower Falls.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with the wider community and a range of external partners.
  • Provide information and direct support to young people on the streets of Lower Falls.
  • Challenge and educate young people on inappropriate behaviour.
  • Encourage young people to broaden their horizons and be active citizens.
  • Monitor and evaluate the quality of youth support work activities, supporting young people in the evaluation of the project and the impact of youth work on their development.
  • Support young people in their understanding in their understanding of risk and challenge and in taking action to address key issues in their lives.
  • Implementing the organisation's safeguarding policy and work with young people to safeguard their welfare and the welfare of others.
  • Be responsible for administration within the project, including effective record keeping and ensuring that the administrative requirements of the Education Authority.
  • Be willing to attend all courses and training made available through the staff development plan.
  • To carry out such duties, as may be assigned by the Line Manager, within the level of the post.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Have or be willing to undertake training in the Youth Support Worker Qualification Or have or be willing to train to OCN Level 1/2/3 Introduction to Youth Work and Programme development.
  • Have or be willing to under take an equivalent or higher Youth Work qualification.
  • Be willing to undertake training in outreach, detached or peripatetic methodologies within youth work.
  • Enhanced Disclosure through Access NI.

Desirable Skills

  • Some experience of youth work, in a voluntary or paid capacity.
  • The selection panel reserves the right to enhance the criteria in order to facilitate a manageable shortlist.

Further Information

The employer is: ST PETERS IMMACULATA YOUTH CLUB. Although this is a part-time temporary opportunity, hours may be extended and it could lead to a permanent position. The trainee position will ensure St. Peters builds a quality youth work team that can access and fulfil positions within the youth centre at the end of the JobStart scheme. All successful candidates will undertake the following courses: First Aid, Safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults, OCN in youth work and other relevant courses that align with SPIYC philosophy. The post is funded by the JobStart Scheme, who will also be a key partner in this work.
