Job description

The role of an Ambulance Care Attendant involves providing transport/care during transportation of patients with varying needs. The safe transportation of these patients is paramount to the role. This is a responsible role which requires a professional and caring attitude. You will be working with patients of varying needs, some of whom will be extremely vulnerable and anxious. You will be expected to remain calm and in control in stressful/challenging situations. As an ACA, you must be flexible to a range of duty types e.g. varying ambulance support shifts and events, as necessitated by the needs of the service. This environment requires flexibility, for example your shift start/finish times can be subject to change at short notice and breaks must be taken around your workload..

Responsibilities

  • Assess, attend and transport patients and relatives in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that all patients are treated with dignity and respect in communications and actions, in particular taking account of cultural differences and disabilities.
  • Undertake a range of work (e.g. pre-planned journeys, ad hoc, discharges and downgraded 999 calls). Ensure that patients have a safe, smooth journey, complying with all relevant traffic legislation and driving with consideration for other road users.
  • Use a range of moving and handling equipment including but not limited to: Carry chairs, wheelchairs, stretchers, scoops, slide sheets.
  • Check that patient has all necessary requirements for their appointment/discharge including paperwork and medication if appropriate. Ensure that the home environment is adequately secured after the departure of the patient and and upon their return.
  • Work within the relevant Scope of Practice (SOP) for the designated role and provide treatment up to the post holder's assessed ability.
  • To ensure that the ambulance vehicle and its equipment and consumable stock is in operational readiness at all times and to report any defects immediately to your Line Manager. After shift, restock any supplies used during shift.
  • Complete necessary vehicle and journey documentation. Recording journey information accurately such as any deterioration in the patient's health, any accidents involving the patient or abusive/threatening behaviour on the appropriate documentation.
  • You will have the responsibility to check, clean and disinfect the ambulance, ensuring that effective infection control standards are adhered to.
  • You must be a team member and represent yourself and the company in a professional and courteous manner at all times, treating everyone with dignity and respect.
  • You must adhere to confidentially, GDPR and all company policies at all times.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • 3 GCSEs at grade C or above (including English and Maths) or an equivalent qualification.
  • A high level of resilience and the ability to handle potentially challenging emotional/distressing situations.
  • To be caring, enthusiastic and able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Physically fit to carry out the role - Moving and handling of people is a large part of the role. For example, you will often be in contact with patients who may have limited/no mobility.
  • Strong communication skills (e.g. talking with patients, their families, crewmates and other Salus team members, hospital staff and representatives of other organisations involved in their care, such as social services, safeguarding teams etc.)
  • To be able to use your initiative and react quickly to a fluid environment.
  • Successful completion of training including FREC 3 and enhanced Access NI Check.

Desirable Skills

  • Hold a FREC 3 certificate (or equivalent).
  • Experience of delivering patient centred care and of dealing with people and members of the public.
  • Full driving licence with no more than 3 penalty points.
  • Have experience of delivering first aid.
  • Experience of working effectively as a member of a team.
  • Can evidence any additional training qualifications relevant to the role.
