Childcare Assistant


Job description

The childcare assistant should support the leader and other staff in providing a stimulating, progressive and varied programme of play and ensuring the safety and well-being of the children attending the group. .

Responsibilities

  • The childcare assistant should support the leader and other staff in providing a stimulating, progressive and varied programme of play and ensuring the safety and well-being of the children attending the group.
  • Keep completely confidential, any information regarding the children, their families or other staff, which is learnt as part of the placement.
  • Share responsibility for the care and welfare of the children.
  • Be vigilant for Safeguarding issues.
  • Be able to work flexible hours between 9am and 6pm.
  • Ensure effective team working.
  • Help to prepare and fully set out the playroom before children arrive and help tidy up afterwards.
  • Help to plan, provide and take part in activities.
  • Take part in special events, outings and visits.
  • Listen to, encourage, enable, stimulate and ensure the safekeeping of the children.
  • Supervise outdoor play.
  • Help children with homework.
  • Help with cleaning duties.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Previous work experience with children.
  • NVQ L3 Childcare and Education.
  • Ability to identify problems and refer to leader.
  • Work as part of a team.
  • Vetted by Social Services/Access NI.
  • Numeracy and literacy skills.
  • Specific play skills, i.e. arts and crafts, music, etc.
  • Other interests and skills that would benefit the group.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Ability to relate well to children and other staff.
  • Ability to help lift or move equipment when required.
  • Attend relevant courses as directed by the leader. These include Safeguarding, Paediatric First Aid and Food Hygiene. Attend training and meetings.
  • Ability to relate well to children and other staff.
  • Assurance on punctuality.

Desirable Skills

  • Ability to identify problems and refer to leader.
  • Have a full clean driving licence and access to a car.
