Job description

To provide on-site security, maintenance, transport and porterage services under the direction of the designated Line Manager or other Authorised Person and in accordance with all relevant legislative and health and safety requirements..

Responsibilities

  • Main Duties and Responsibilities (as described in job description available on school website www.thornhillcollege.org.uk)
  • Security of the Premises (including school meals accommodation) and its contents.
  • Operate Fire Alarm, Burglar Alarm and Building Security Systems and ensure that any faults are rectified promptly.
  • Attend after-hour break in and vandalism at the premises and ensure that the premises are secure and cleaned at the earliest opportunity when clearance has been given.
  • Report any unauthorised entry or damage to the designated Line Manager or other Authorised Person.
  • During normal working hours report any suspicious activity of persons immediately to the designated Line Manager or other Authorised Person to ensure a safe working environment for building users.
  • Any breach of security must be reported to the designated Line Manager or other Authorised Person. A breach would include the finding of used needles, or suspicious illegal substance abuse in accordance with School Policy.
  • Apply grit/rock salt in times of snow and frost to ensure pathways and entrances are free from snow and ice.
  • Efficient operation of the boiler/heating system ensuring value for money and energy conservation.
  • Inspect and report any defects on fire fighting equipment to the designated Line Manager or other Authorised Person.
  • Ensure that all external surface drains and gullies and kitchen grease-traps within the building complex are free flowing and clean by removing obstructions up to 3.35m.
  • Provide an ongoing cleaning service to the entire premises to deal with such things as spillage, flooding, litter or any cleaning problem associated with weather conditions.
  • Clean external signs, light covers, and notices up to 3.35 m.
  • Receipt and transport of stores and materials and other goods that have been delivered and their distribution to and from appropriate points of storage.
  • Prepare reports on any defects in the premises externally and internally.
  • Organise in conjunction with the designated Line Manager or other Authorised Person the employment of outside contractors or workmen and monitor their presence reporting any deviation from their work routine.
  • Ensure that defects in equipment are reported immediately to the designated Line Manager or other Authorised Person and that a record of equipment repaired is kept and that all equipment is cleaned and stored safely.
  • Ensure that all records in respect of staff attendance, holidays absence are completed, authorised and returned promptly to Personnel/Salaries & Wages.
  • Make appropriate recommendations to ensure that out-of-hours revenue streams are maximised.
  • Building Supervisors will organise or carry out Induction and Refresher training of building supervisory staff and keep a record of such training.
  • Open and close the premises and grounds, except in circumstances where the Line Manager or other Authorised Person allows another person to do so.
  • Ensure that the premises are secured at the end of each day.
  • Safe custody of the keys of the premises.
  • Operate and monitor Security Camera System including changing and storing of used tapes where appropriate.
  • Lighting and heating of the premises and the routine maintenance of plant including school meals accommodation.
  • Monitor and document the usage of fuel, water and electricity.
  • Replace lamps, tubes and plugs to a level of 3.35m using appropriate equipment, except where access from above can be gained.
  • Ensure that all external areas are clean, tidy and free of litter.
  • Maintenance of school lawns including associated trees and shrubbery.
  • Maintenance of all external sporting facilities.
  • Ensuring that all grass cutting and other equipment is properly maintained.
  • Ensure that bins within the building complex are regularly washed and cleaned (including school meals bins).
  • Empty on a daily basis litter bins within the building complex.
  • Dispatch goods and other materials from the building.
  • Assist where required with the setting out and removal of lunch tables and chairs.
  • To transport all refuse bins to and from their collection point.
  • Prepare halls and rooms for examinations and other purposes.
  • Driving of school bus/minibus as required.
  • Maintenance of school bus/minibus.
  • Organising additional transport, as required, for extra curricular activities.
  • Liaison with School Transport Officer regarding additional transport requirements during examination periods.
  • Complete all paperwork associated with the post and writing reports when required.
  • Maintain records of consumable stocks and inventory of equipment.
  • Facilitate & manage the out-of-hours use of the school including liaison with relevant internal staff and external users.
  • Prepare the premises for after-school activities and subsequently prepare the school for its normal use.
  • Oversee usage of school premises by outside groups to minimise impact on daily school requirements.
  • Collect fees or arrange with relevant finance personnel to ensure outside groups are billed appropriately.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of six months' experience working as an assistant building supervisor and/or caretaker.
  • A clean current driving licence.
  • Good organisational skills.
  • Knowledge of and ability to comply with the relevant legislative requirements.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience of working as an assistant building supervisor and/or building supervisor and/or caretaker and or cleaner in an educational setting.
