Job description

The Occupational Health Service (OHS) provides a comprehensive occupational health service to the NICS departments and their agencies, and medical advisory services to several non-departmental public and arm’s length bodies. OHS is a multi-disciplinary organisation led by the Grade 5 Director; supported by an Occupational Health Consultant, Head of Occupational Nursing and Head of business support. The Occupational Technician will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team which includes a senior occupational health technician, medical officers, occupational health nurse specialists, an occupational therapist (mental health) and business support staff, to provide a range of occupational health services to clients. The Occupational Health Technician will report to the Senior Occupational Health Technician and will also have the support of the OHS multi-disciplinary team. The purpose of the post is to ensure that OHS is responsive to the existing and emerging healthcare needs of the NICS and client bodies. Responsibilities

  • Ensuring client comfort and safety while in the Occupational Health Department.
  • Ensuring, under the supervision of OHNPs that appropriate health promotion material is available to clients. Arranging appointments for Occupational Health Clients.
  • Following up non attendees with departments and establishing systems to improve attendance. Participating in health screening programmes or health surveillance programmes under supervision/instruction of the OHNP.
  • Assisting with delivery of training programmes under supervision of the OHNP. Undertake pre-employment health assessment as directed by the OHNP including biometric measurements as required.
  • The post holder will be responsible for taking blood samples by venepuncture means within defined policies and approved procedures. Ensures that all needles and equipment are disposed of according to the departments policy.
  • Recording data on the OHS computer system including vaccination appointments and recalls. Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health Record management process.
  • Operate all relevant IT systems ensuring that all information is accurate and up to date. Liaising with external & department stakeholders.
  • Undertake other general office tasks such as photocopying, scanning, general filing of medical information. Take incoming calls and make outgoing calls for the clinical nurses and specialist team using agreed protocols.
  • Ensure adequate stock of information leaflets and order supplies and equipment as required. To ensure that work for which responsible is processed in a timely manner in accordance with agreed performance standards.
  • Continually strive to improve quality, standards, and procedures within area of responsibility contributing to the ongoing desire to improve delivery of services.
  • Actively participate in the induction and training of new staff within the team. Actively participate in projects and any proposed wellbeing initiatives
  • Liaise with internal departments, HR, and other key stakeholders in coordinating and organising staff health and well-being initiatives.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Applicants must, by the closing date of this application Must have a minimum of 1 year's experience working within a multidisciplinary team within an occupational health or care setting.
  • And Must hold an approved Occupational health technicians' qualification, or be prepared to complete an approved occupational health technician qualification with immediate effect, if not already held.
  • And Must be willing to undertake venepuncture and complete venepuncture training if not already held.
  • And Must be competent in the use of Microsoft Office packages including Excel, Word and Outlook.
