Tug / Dredge Master (Safety Critical Role)


Job description

Responsible as Master on board harbour tugs and dredgers, providing a towage and dredging service within the Port limits, and on an external contract basis as directed. Assisting marine operations both ashore and on board harbour craft to deliver an effective marine service..

Responsibilities

  • Responsible as Master on board harbour tugs and dredgers, ensuring safe navigation, manoeuvring and mooring of the vessel.
  • Responsible for operating vessel safely and efficiently.
  • Provide a towage service to all vessels that are subject to towage within the Port limits and on external contracted towage operations.
  • Provide a dredging service within Port limits and on external contracted dredging operations.
  • Responsible for the safety of crew members including allocating duties and responsibilities whilst on board.
  • Assist in scheduled and ad hoc maintenance of vessels; fault reporting; and escalating repair work when necessary.
  • Assist in conducting hydrographic surveys.
  • Operate and maintain navigational aids in accordance with marine operational procedures.
  • Responsible for personal time management to ensure delivery of an effective and efficient Marine service within the Port that has the flexibility to meet fluctuating work demands.
  • Carry out duties and responsibilities in compliance with the Ports Safe Systems of Work to prevent harm to all personnel and damage to equipment, investigating any query or issue raised in relation to safety.
  • Committed to continuous improvement and identifying and implementing improved systems of work.
  • Complete and retain necessary documents ensuring a logical records system is maintained and updated.
  • Contribute to, implement, monitor, and review adherence to safe systems of work. Contribute to risk assessments with support from the Environmental Health and Safety Officer.
  • Follow organisation policies and procedures and adhere to Human Resources, Health and Safety policies and relevant statutory regulations including UK-GDPR.
  • Identify and report all safety observations to the Environmental Health and Safety Officer as soon as possible.
  • Report all non-compliance of regulations and procedures to the relevant departments as soon as possible.
  • Always represent the Organisation in a reputable and professional manner.
  • Contribute to the development of a respectful and mutually supportive working environment consulting with and supporting other departments as appropriate.
  • Undertake other duties in the harbour within your area of competence as directed.
  • Maintain high standards of personal accountability.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Minimum STCW OOW; Or STCW Master (Code Vessels less than 200GT unlimited area); or equivalent certificate.
  • A minimum 3 years relevant experience in a marine environment.
  • Working knowledge of marine health and safety procedures.
  • Working knowledge of marine navigation.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and work in a systematic and organised manner to ensure operations are completed within target times.
  • Ability to manage own workload to deliver an effective and efficient marine service with the flexibility to adapt to fluctuating demands.
  • Current Seafarer Medical Certificate (ENG 1).
  • Basic IT skills to include experience using MS Office applications such as MS Outlook, MS Excel, MS Word and other IT systems such as Computerised Maintenance Management Systems and online training platforms.
  • Full current driving licence or access to a form of transport to enable the post holder to meet the requirements of the post in full.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience of towing and dredging operations.
  • Experience operating Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tugs.

Work time: Start time will vary depending on operational need. Includes early morning, afternoon, late nights.
