Job description
Purpose: To develop and deliver teaching within the Pathways project (Education Other Than At School) with a focus on progression. The role will include the design and delivery of lesson plan lead sessions, ensuring accreditation is adhered to with all relevant external qualification bodies across 3 learning centres in Belfast. To support vulnerable learners as appropriate to their individual needs and requirements on the basis of an initial assessment and within a thematic framework which makes learning practical and relevant to those young people aged 15-16 years who have found it difficult to engage within a mainstream learning environment.
Responsibilities
- Plan, agree and deliver a thematic framework which makes learning practical and relevant to those young people aged 14 -16 years who have found it difficult to engage within a mainstream learning environment.
- Provide on-going support and guidance that supports the delivery of the curriculum. Provide high quality teaching with a focus on individual targets that are achieved through the use of a working PLP.
- Undertake the assessment of students as required by external examination bodies. Provide high quality feedback and marking to students which is accessible to all.
- Ensure equal access to the curriculum for all students through effective scaffolding, differentiation, deployment of resources and intervention as appropriate.
- Participate in the identification of own needs and demonstrate a willingness to learn, apply new skills and meet new challenges. Engage in student progress meetings and identify targets/goals.
- Oversee comprehensive assessment of learner’s additional needs through essential skills initial assessments and similar tools.
- Plan and manage own workload effectively, using own initiative and prioritise accordingly. Develop and deliver a full curriculum adhering to the external Awarding Body guidelines.
- Set out clear aims, objectives and goals for learners. Encouraging full participation in the learning journey for all students, supporting them to address and overcome barriers that may hinder their development.
- Plan and agree a personal learning plan for students according to their individual abilities and aspirations. Complete quarterly soft skills assessments with each learner.
- Communicate regularly with colleagues and any other professionals involved in the learner’s journey. Seek feedback from service users on service provided and deal with informal complaints in accordance with agreed procedures.
- Seek advice, guidance and adhere to instructions from Line Management. Contribute to risk assessment mechanisms.
- Facilitate activities in line with Extern’s policies including health and safety, transport and lone working. Promote and maintain safety and security in the working environment
- Always adhere to safeguarding procedures and relevant internal and external policies and standards. Report safeguarding concerns in a timely manner in line with Extern policy. Attend mandatory safeguarding training.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- A professional teaching qualification and/or meet the essential skills teaching criteria outlined in DEL Circular ESO1/12.
- Knowledge and experience of assessment and accreditation processes across at least one of the awarding bodies such as OCN, CCEA, AQA etc.
- Minimum of a Level 3 Qualification (as set out in the RQF Framework) in a relevant field/subject i.e. literacy and numeracy or,
- In the absence of this qualification requirement, 2 years recent, relevant experience of working in a similar role with a similar service user group.
- 6 months substantial experience of working directly with a similar service user group.
- Experience and knowledge of current N.I. curriculum.
- I.T. competent including use of Microsoft 365.
- Be registered or willing to register with NISCC within 3 months of commencement of employment (you will be required to provide evidence of NISCC registration).
