Specialist Ophthalmic Practitioner


Job description

The post holder will undertake clinical duties including extended role for pre/post cataract assessment, Minor surgery and glaucoma assessment whilst providing expert knowledge and skills to ensure the delivery of holistic care in the care settings. He/she will liaise with the Ophthalmology Consultants, and the various professions involved in caring for this group of patients to provide a high level of clinical leadership and patient care. The post holder is expected to be a clinical expert and will establish links with General Practitioners, Practice Nurses, Community Nurses, and other care providers, offering improved communication, information and education.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate clinical expertise in designated clinical ophthalmology practice.
  • Promote a culture of safe practice by ensuring staff adhere to policies/ procedures to minimise risk to patients, staff and others.
  • He/she will participate in education programmes for other health care professionals in both the hospital and community settings.
  • He/she will liaise with other hospitals and community settings.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Level 1 Registered Nurse on live NMC Register OR Orthoptic degree with current HCPC registration OR BSc Hons Optometry with current full General Optical Council registration.
  • 5 years post registration experience, 3 of which must be in an Ophthalmology setting.
  • Recognised Ophthalmology module or be in the process of completing.
  • Non-medical prescribing / exemptions to medicine or willingness to undertake.
