Job description
The Clinical Associate in Psychology (CAP) Traineeship has been established in partnership between Southern Health & Social Care Trust and Ulster University. For the duration of the fixed term 12 month Traineeship, the Trainee will undertake a Masters level degree programme at Ulster University while being employed on a full-time basis by the Trust, developing their clinical skills and competencies relevant to the CAP role. Over the course of the programme they will develop the necessary learning, skills and experience to enable them reach the qualification standard of a fully qualified CAP. Responsibilities
- Develop the ability to perform assessments and understand how to analyse and appraise the range of cognitive-behavioural and other psychological assessment methods used within applied clinical practice to underpin assessment.
- Develop ability to carry out risk assessments in relation to psychological distress and ensure that risk formulations are integrated with interventions understanding contingency management and the use of risk indicators in mitigating against crises.
- Develop the ability to analyse and appraise the range of cognitive-behavioural and other psychological assessment methods used within applied clinical practice to underpin diagnosis and/or formulation.
- Develop the ability to create collaborative formulations with children / young people and families so as to sense-check understandings and influence delivery of evidenced-based individualised psychological interventions.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- Applicants must hold a 2:1 degree in Psychology, which confers eligibility for the Graduate Basis for Chartered Status with the British Psychological Society (BPS) or the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) in 2025.
- Be aware that they need to be accepted, onto the University of Ulster MSC CAP for CYP Trainee Clinical Associate in Psychology, on appointment.
- A minimum of 6 months paid experience, working in mental health or emotional health and wellbeing therapeutic services, in a statutory or community and voluntary organisation.
Desirable Skills
- Experience D 1 A minimum of 6 months paid experience working with children and young people in mental health or emotional health and wellbeing therapeutic services, within a statutory or community/voluntary organisation.
