Fresh Food Assistant
Job description

Fresh Food Assistants work in various areas of Newell Stores, including our Butchery and Deli (hot or cold). Their role involves serving customers and offering advice. The most important part of the job is helping customers in any way they need - whether that's answering questions, providing advice to help create everyday favourite dishes or helping to locate exactly what the customer has came in for. You will also help keep your fresh department clean and tidy.
Responsibilities
- Answer customers’ questions about products on display.
- Operate equipment and scales in your department as trained.
- Pack away all deliveries as they arrive on site - freshness must remain a priority, ensuring rotation of stock.
- Work with fellow team members to keep your supermarket clean and tidy, with a priority on health and safety.
- Maintain all HACCP files and a standard of care that exceeds government standards. All staff must also keep their Hygiene training up to date as a legal requirement.
- Make sure that the counters/cabinets are well stocked and that items are always attractively displayed.
- Being knowledgeable regarding company policies and procedures.
- When considered necessary or appropriate, you are liable to transfer to or undertake other duties, within competence and within reason, in order to meet fluctuations or priorities in work demands.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- Customer service skills.
- Basic numeracy.
- Teamwork.
- Flexibility.
- Good communication skills, especially with customers, suppliers and co-workers.
Desirable Skills
- Experience in food preparation particularly preparing deli meals.
- Understanding of food handling in compliance with health and safety and HACCP guidelines.
- Food Safety Level 2 qualification.
