THE EMPLOYER IS: MILLBURN COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT LTD This new role has been created specifically for the JobStart Scheme to provide hands on experience in a busy community café environment. The Kitchen Porter will support the café team by maintaining cleanliness and hygiene standards, assisting with basic food preparation, and ensuring the smooth daily running of The Calf Lane Kitchen, a social enterprise café serving the local community. This role offers an excellent opportunity for an individual to gain valuable catering, teamwork, and customer service experience in a supportive community setting. (No previous experience is required - full training and supervision will be provided as part of the JobStart placement.)
Responsibilities
- Assist with basic food preparation and serving as directed by café staff.
- Wash dishes, utensils, and kitchen equipment, keeping all areas clean and hygienic.
- Maintain cleanliness of kitchen floors, surfaces, and storage areas.
- Support with deliveries, stock rotation, and organising supplies.
- Assist with setting up and clearing tables and serving areas as required.
- Work as part of a small, friendly team, supporting café operations during busy periods.
- Follow food hygiene, health & safety, and allergen control procedures at all times.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- Good work ethic and reliability - able to arrive on time, follow instructions, and complete tasks responsibly.
- Willingness to learn - open to receiving training in food hygiene, kitchen safety, and basic food preparation.
- Ability to work as part of a team - cooperative and supportive when working with café staff and volunteers.
- Maintaining cleanliness and professionalism while handling food or working in the café.
- Good communication skills - able to understand directions, ask questions when needed, and communicate clearly with colleagues.
- Happy helping others and contributing to a welcoming community café environment.
Desirable Skills
- Keen Interest in food preparation and hospitality - enthusiasm for working in a kitchen or café environment.
- Basic understanding of food hygiene and safety (for example, keeping areas clean and following hygiene rules).
- Attention to detail - careful when cleaning, handling dishes, or preparing food to maintain high standards.
- Time management and reliability - able to arrive on time, complete tasks efficiently, and maintain a steady work pace.
