Trainee Youth Support Worker
Job description
THE EMPLOYER IS: HOLY FAMILY YOUTH CENTRE We are seeking a person to support us in the delivery of our youthwork programme within our youth centre in North Belfast. The role will require the post holder to work directly with young people to develop their social education by providing a varied programme of activities. This will take place through our youth centre drop in opening hours plus at other times where young people are engaging in social action, sports or project work. The role will also require the post holder to participate in outreach and detached work and work closely with other youthwork practitioners, community and statutory partners. Engagement will focus on local streets and parks and training will be provided. You will be assisting in the development and delivery of the agreed programmes, projects, activities and events and the implementation of organisational policies. Attending any training as required and fulfilling any obligations under the JobStart Scheme.
Responsibilities
- To identify, prioritise and deliver a programme of youth work activities based on need in the designated area, related to "A Model for Effective Practice".
- Provide information and support to young people to assist them to express and realise their goals and to work effectively in groups.
- Challenge oppressive behaviour in young people.
- Encourage young people to broaden their horizons and be active citizens.
- Monitor and evaluate the quality of youth work activities, supporting young people in the evaluation of the activities and the impact of youth work on their development.
- Support young people in their understanding of risk and challenge and in taking action to address key issues in their lives.
- Implement the Management Committee's Child Protection Policy and work with young people to safeguard their welfare and the welfare of others.
- To ensure Programme Delivery Folders are kept up to date and collate all relevant supporting documentation.
- To help to maintain a clean and safe environment within the youth centre.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- Be willing to work as part of a team to support children and youth people within the youth centre and wider community and undertake any relevant training as required.
- Good understanding of the issues facing children and young people.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Flexible and willing to work unsocial hours.
Desirable Skills
- Experience of working with children and young people.
- Experience of outreach and detached work.
- Full driving licence.
