Job description
THE EMPLOYER IS: WARINGSTOWN CRICKET CLUB Location: Waringstown (working on the club ground and associated playing facilities) To prepare, maintain and present the playing surfaces (square, wickets, outfield), surrounding ground and facility infrastructure to a high standard so that all matches, training sessions and club events can be delivered safely and professionally.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and maintain the cricket square, wickets and outfield for all club matches (senior, junior, women/girls) and training sessions.
- Roll, mow, mark, water, fertilise and manage wickets and outfield.
- Repair and renovate the square or wicket surfaces post-season and during the season as required (e.g., repair foot holes, re-seed worn areas, aerate).
- Maintain the general ground environs: pavilion surrounds, score box area, access paths, drainage, turf edges, and other external areas to ensure a tidy, safe and welcoming facility.
- Operate, maintain and service ground machinery (mowers, rollers, spikers, irrigation systems) including making sure equipment is cleaned, stored appropriately and in safe working order.
- Monitor and maintain turf health: weed and pest control, fertilising, soil care, irrigation and drainage management in line with best practice.
- Undertake other duties as reasonably required by the club to support the development and maintenance of the ground and facilities.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- Experience (paid or voluntary) in groundskeeping, turf maintenance, or in a related outdoor/groundscape role.
- Ability to operate turf-care machinery safely and maintain equipment.
- Good organisational and time-management skills (able to plan ahead, work to deadlines, respond to weather/pitch demands).
- Ability to work outdoors in variable weather, and to work early/odd hours (weekends/mornings) as required.
- Basic computer skills (for record-keeping, scheduling, equipment logs).
- A commitment to health & safety and safe working practices, including use of machinery and chemical treatments (if applicable).
Desirable Skills
- Previous experience in a club/cricket ground environment (or other sporting turf) including pitch preparation in a cricket context.
- Understanding of cricket playing-surface fundamentals (square preparation, wicket repair, drainage, irrigation) and of the use of specialist cricket pitch machinery.
- Full UK driving licence (useful for procurement of materials, fuel, travel to suppliers etc).
- Ability to liaise with volunteers/club members and to mentor/guide any seasonal assistants or volunteer helpers.
- Passion for sport and specifically cricket, and an appreciation for the importance of high quality playing surfaces.
