Health Care Assistant
Job description
To provide a full and comprehensive venipuncture and sampling service with due regard to procedures governing safe clinical practice, confidentiality, cross infection and Health & Safety and to show respect for dignity and comfort of the patients.
Responsibilities
- To provide an efficient and accurate sampling service on all patients.
- To be individually responsible for carrying out procedures for the labelling and recording of specimens ensuring accuracy and sage practice according to established protocols.
- To have full working knowledge of blood collection tubes, forms and systems.
- To have a thorough knowledge of the appropriate range of tests for each container and to ensure that appropriate blood volumes are collected.
- To work as part of a multidisciplinary team liaising with medical, nursing, administration and laboratory staff.
- To communicate effectively with patients, parents and relatives.
- To understand and implement when required blood spill protocol and management of same.
- Cleaning and maintenance of clinical equipment.
- Reporting faults in line with practice protocol.
- Correct disposal and replacement of sharp bins in line with policies and procedures.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- NVQ3 in Health & Social Care or Care Certificate or equivalent knowledge and experience.
- Aware of professional boundaries they are working to, be aware of their limitations and be able to assess their own competency.
- Must be an excellent communicator both verbally and in writing.
- Must wear the uniform provided by the practice.
- Understanding of confidentiality, needs to be sensitive when dealing with confidential matters.
- Computer skills preferably with a knowledge of EMIS clinical system.
- Comfortable with following procedures, guidelines and protocols.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Must be adaptable dealing with changing priorities.
- Be a good team player.
