THE EMPLOYER IS: UNIVERSITY OF ATYPICAL FOR ARTS AND DISABILITY University of Atypical for Arts and Disability is a disabled-led arts organisation and this role will engage d/Deaf, disabled or neurodivergent people in activity across the Atypical Gallery and Ledger Studio. This role would include engaging with disabled people in gallery or studio activity. The person appointed will have a dedicated role in overseeing the use of the gallery and studio by external groups in evenings and at weekends. The person will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of creative and accessible programmes of activity specifically for adults who are d/Deaf, disabled and neurodivergent, both inside the Gallery/Studio and in other locations. This new role will require excellent people skills, as well as understanding and knowledge of disability and the arts and creative sector. Administrative tasks including email and telephone communication and creating planning documents and collating and presenting short reports is essential. The role will provide the appointed person with opportunities to develop skills in event planning and management, and experience working in the arts and disability sector.

Responsibilities

  • Act as Keyholder and principal point of contact for specified external bookings in the studio or gallery.
  • Assisting with event management at other University of Atypical events including Bounce Festival planning and one-off activity in external venues.
  • Manage advance communication with external bookers including confirming technical and access requirements.
  • Manage event set-up including seating, screens/speakers/PA, and hospitality.
  • Engage with participants and audiences of creative programmes in a professional gallery and studio context.
  • Contribute to media promotion, social media engagement and networking on behalf of the organisation.
  • Undertake Safeguarding training as part of the organisation’s Adult Safeguarding Adults policy.
  • Opportunities to undertake other training including Deaf Awareness and introductory British Sign Language.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Evidence of experience in event/workshop/gallery management or similar experience in busy customer-focussed environment.
  • Evidence of financial literacy and cash handling or budget administration.
  • Evidence of strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Evidence of IT and communication skills including word processor, spreadsheet, calendar, email and phone communication.
  • Evidence of ability to manage time effectively and manage bookings calendar.
  • Evidence of ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritise effectively.
  • Evidence of ability to work with others.
  • Evidence of positive approach to problem-solving.
  • Evidence of interest in the cultural sector and/or disability arts.
  • Evidence of willingness to learn and undertake training as required.

Desirable Skills

  • Evidence of knowledge of Google Suite including Google Calendar.
  • Evidence of experience in a professional arts venue or gallery.
  • Evidence of awareness of disability, d/Deaf culture and neurodiversity in the context of the arts.
  • Evidence of understanding of barriers and solutions to barriers faced by disabled, d/Deaf and Neurodivergent artists, staff and audiences.
  • Direct lived experience of disability.
