Job description

The Custody Nurse Practitioner will autonomously assess, diagnose, treat or refer those detainees within their scope of practice and will be committed to developing their knowledge, skills and competence to meet the ever-changing needs of the service. Responsibilities

• Provide an effective nursing service to the custody suite, conducting clinical assessments, identifying and implementing appropriate interventions, collecting forensic samples, provide advice and guidance.
• In conjunction with the lead nurse, develop and promote health care services in police custody suites in Northern Ireland.
• Ensure that health care provision in the custody environment is of an ‘equivalent’ standard to that provided in the wider community.
• Conduct clinical assessments of the detained persons to determine whether an individual is fit to be detained, interviewed, charged, released ensuring the safety of individuals and integrity of criminal justice processes.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

• Part 1 Adult Nursing on NMC Register.
• 5 years post registration experience with 3 years’ experience in: Acute or Emergency Care/Primary Care.
• And Course in General Forensic Medicine (GFM) or willing to complete within the next 6 months.

Desirable Skills

• Health assessment module or willing to undertake and successfully complete the Qualification within a timescale as agreed by the Lead Nurse Custody Healthcare.

Further Information

Location: Musgrave/Antrim Custody Suite. The post holder may be required to work at other custody suites within the region, as the service needs dictates. Work Time: The role will operate on a 24 hour, 7 day a week shift pattern that includes early mornings, night shifts, weekends and public holidays. Candidates will be asked to complete a security vetting questionnaire.
