THE EMPLOYER IS: ROE VALLEY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION The Youth Support Worker will play a key role in delivering a range of youth programmes aimed at young people aged 14-24 years. This position involves creating and supporting activities that provide a safe space and foster a sense of belonging for participants. The role includes assisting in initiatives that enhance young people’s participation skills and offering opportunities for them to raise aspirations, build confidence, and develop self-esteem.

Responsibilities

  • Build trusting, professional relationships with young people aged typically 5-25.
  • Offer emotional support, guidance, and a safe space for young people to discuss challenges.
  • Help them develop confidence, independence, and positive coping strategies.
  • Plan and run group activities, workshops, or life-skills sessions (e.g., health, education, employment, relationships).
  • Promote positive engagement in community, social, and recreational activities.
  • Recognise, report, and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns.
  • Follow organisational and statutory safeguarding procedures at all times.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and ensure young people’s safety and wellbeing.
  • Encourage positive choices, behaviour, and engagement.
  • Ensure equality, diversity, and inclusion in all work.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Empathy and active listening - ability to understand young people’s feelings and experiences.
  • Building rapport and trust - forming positive, professional relationships with young people.
  • Communication skills - clear, age-appropriate communication (verbal and written).
  • Non-judgemental attitude - supporting young people without bias or assumptions.
  • Assessment skills - identifying needs, risks, strengths, and appropriate interventions.
  • Safeguarding knowledge - understanding child protection procedures, confidentiality, and legal duties.
  • Motivational skills - encouraging engagement, promoting resilience and positive choices.

Desirable Skills

  • Conflict resolution and de-escalation - managing challenging behaviour calmly and safely.

The Employer is: ROE VALLEY RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION JobStart Opportunity - Working Hours Information. Standard Hours: up to 25 hours per week. Flexible/Reduced Hours: May be available upon approval by a Work Coach. Additional Hours: The employer may offer extra hours depending on availability.
