Assistant Statistician
Job description
The NICS comprises nine departments that support the Northern Ireland Executive and Ministers. We do this by developing and implementing government policies and legislation and delivering key public services in areas such as health public finances, social development, justice, education, regeneration, environment, culture, agriculture, economic development, employment and transport. In addition, the Public Prosecution Service is a non- Ministerial Department staffed by Civil Servants. All civil servants are appointed on merit and on the basis of fair and open competition. They are expected to carry out their role with dedication and a commitment to the NI Civil Service’s core values: integrity, honesty, objectivity, and impartiality. NISRA is an Executive Agency of the Department of Finance (DoF) and provides statistics, research and registration services and is responsible for taking the Census of Population. NISRA’s core purpose is: to provide a high quality, cost effective registration, statistical and research service that informs the democratic processes and public policy; and to provide a window on Northern Ireland’s society and its economy by providing evidence to inform decision-making. Around 520 staff work in NISRA of whom nearly three quarters are statisticians and social researchers (all of whom are graded as Statisticians) drawn from a range of academic disciplines including: maths, psychology, geography, computing, data science and engineering (all subjects with statistics included as part of their course content). NISRA staff work in all Government Departments and a range of other public sector bodies and can expect to work in a number of different organisations throughout their career. The jobs on offer will normally be based in Greater Belfast, including the Bangor area, although there may be a small number of vacancies based in other parts of Northern Ireland. Under the NICS Hybrid Working Policy, a hybrid form of working may also be available which blends home and remote working with working in the office. Availability of such an arrangement will be determined by local line management.

Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- At least a second class honours degree 2.2 that includes at least one module in statistics, data analysis or social science research methods.
- OR A postgraduate degree that includes at least one module in statistics, data analysis or social science research methods.
