Clinical Pharmacist with on call Band 7


Job description

In order to meet the overall mission of the Trust the post holder will work as a Clinical Pharmacist providing a clinical pharmacy service to inpatient wards and clinics Band 6/7 Pharmacists will either: Gain rotational experience across unscheduled care (including emergency department), medical, surgical and other clinical specialties. Specialities include ICU, medical day case, biologic therapies, mental health, gastroenterology, cardiology, palliative care, respiratory, maternity, paediatrics, orthopaedics, general surgery, hospital at home (based in Ards hospital) & medication and patient safety. Rotations will depend on service needs, typically 12 months in duration. Work in the Emergency Department as a band 6/7 pharmacist. Ensure the safe, effective and economic use of medicines.

Responsibilities

  • Complete the Foundation Programme (FP2 or original format FP) within 12 months of appointment to allow progression to a band 7.
  • Required to undertake and attain the prescribing qualification within first 2 years of appointment
  • To practise as a generalist Independent Pharmacist Prescriber during the patients stay and at discharge.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 2 years post registration experience of which 18 months (by 31 March 2026) must be as a band 6 hospital pharmacist.
  • MPharm or equivalent
  • Member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland or eligible for membership
  • Completed and passed a recognised vocational training programme and/or have a post graduate certificate in an area of pharmacy relevant to this post will allow post holder to commence as band 7 or
  • To progress to band 7 candidates must complete and pass a recognised vocational training programme and/or have a postgraduate certificate in an area of pharmacy relevant to this post within 12 months of appointment.
  • Those submitting FP2 in 2026 are eligible to apply for this post and will progress to band 7 on completion.
  • Those submitting original FP pathway in next 12 months are eligible to apply for this post and will progress to band 7 on completion.
  • Hold a current full driving licence, which is valid for use in the UK, and have access to a car on appointment.
  • Able to attend the Ulster Pharmacy within 45 minutes if called to attend whilst on call.
  • These criteria will be waived in the case of applicants whose disability prohibits driving but who have access to a form of transport approved by the Trust, which will permit them to carry out the duties of the post.

Desirable Skills

  • Practising Pharmacist Independent Prescriber. Successful candidates will be required to undertake and complete this qualification within 18 months of appointment/ within APP framework if they don’t already have it.
