Locum Consultant in Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgery
Job description
To provide optimum quality of effective and efficient Orthopaedic Trauma care within the contract resources available to the Western HSC Trust predominantly in Altnagelvin Hospital. To undertake the provision of a trauma service to Londonderry, Enniskillen, Omagh, Limavady and Coleraine. The trust provides outpatient clinics at the South West Acute Hospital, OHPCC, Waterside Health Centre, Roe Valley Hospital and Causeway Hospital. In order to supply a comprehensive and regular outreach service to the extended catchment areas this work will be shared with the incumbent team of 15 consultants. It may be necessary therefore to undertake peripheral outpatient clinics at the South West Acute Hospital, OHPCC, Roe Valley Hospital, Waterside Health Centre and Causeway Hospital.
Responsibilities
- Primary responsibility is for patient care and team leadership. The successful applicant will also be involved in clinical governance, education and training. The Trust supports the requirements for continuing professional development (CPD) as laid
- down by the GMC and surgical colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.
- The prime clinical responsibility is to be accountable for the continuous care of his/her patients and, as part of this responsibility, undertake shared rota arrangements ensuring appropriate standards of care for patients and standards of education,
- support and supervision for resident staff at all times.
- The successful applicant will promote and develop multidisciplinary teamwork within the specialty and will communicate effectively with all agencies and personnel involved in providing Orthopaedic and Trauma services.
- The successful applicant will work together with his/her orthopaedic and trauma colleagues in the further development of orthopaedic trauma services in the area.
- The successful applicant will be responsible for providing procedures relating to the specialty and will develop same in keeping with medical advances.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- Hold or be eligible for Full General Medical Council (London) registration and Licence to Practise.
- Be on or be eligible to be on the GMC Specialist Register for Trauma & Orthopaedics via: CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview date), or CESR Experience in orthopaedic trauma surgery would be essential.
- Hold a current full driving licence, which is valid for use in the UK, and have access to a car on appointment. This criterion will be waived in the case of applicants whose disability prohibits driving but who have access to a form of transport
- approved by the Trust, which will permit them to carry out the duties of the post.
Desirable Skills
- Applicants must possess either FRCS (Tr&Orth) or an equivalent qualification and must be a Fellow of one of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons.
- Specialist interest in lower limb orthopaedic trauma surgery.
