Policy Support Officer


Job description

THE EMPLOYER IS: KG STRATEGIES KG Strategies is a small Northern Ireland-based consultancy specialising in stakeholder engagement and public consultation, working primarily with public bodies and organisations delivering public services. The Policy Support Officer will support research, policy analysis, and consultation-related work across the business. The role will give the participant practical experience in public policy research, consultation standards, and evidence-based decision-making, while contributing to the development of Consult Hub, a new digital platform designed to improve public understanding of and participation in consultations.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out structured desk research on public consultation policy, legislation, guidance, and best practice relevant to public services.
  • Summarise research findings into short briefing notes, evidence summaries, and internal working documents.
  • Support the development of consultation standards, frameworks, and guidance materials used by KG Strategies in its consultancy and training work.
  • Assist with preparing content for Consult Hub, such as policy explainers, checklists, templates, and background guidance written in plain English.
  • Gather and organise evidence and reference materials to support evaluation, options appraisal, and tender submissions.
  • Maintain research records, source libraries, and reference lists in an organised and accessible way.
  • Support report preparation through proofreading, formatting, and basic quality checks.
  • Assist with general project support tasks linked to stakeholder engagement and consultation work, as required.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Good written communication skills.
  • Ability to carry out online research and summarise information clearly.
  • Basic IT skills, including email, word processing, and online tools.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work methodically.
  • Willingness to learn and take feedback.

Desirable Skills

  • Interest in public policy, public services, or community engagement.
  • Interest in consultation, participation, or governance.
  • Some experience of academic, policy, or report-based writing.
  • Ability to organise information and work with documents or references.
  • Interest in developing analytical and research skills.

The Employer is: KG STRATEGIES JobStart Opportunity - Working Hours Information. Standard Hours: up to 25 hours per week. Flexible/Reduced Hours: May be available upon approval by a Work Coach. Additional Hours: The employer may offer extra hours depending on availability. This should be discussed directly with the employer before starting employment.
