THE EMPLOYER IS: DONAGHMORE HISTORICAL SOCIETY Donaghmore Historical Society (DHS) is a charitable organisation founded in 1983 whose main aims are to encourage the study, recording and presentation of the local history of Donaghmore and district and to maintain a society archive. The Society and its archive are located in former National School in Donaghmore village, County Tyrone, now known as Donaghmore Heritage Centre which will be the Heritage Officer's work base. The job holder will work closely with DHS committee and its officers to assist with the delivery of its objectives and responsibilities. The Heritage Centre will be open to the public during their working hours and the jobholder will be expected to provide a safe, welcoming and helpful environment for visitors. Job holders will be required to work independently, often without immediate supervision. The job holder will usually work across four days each week and occasional weekend and evening working may be required. This is an excellent opportunity for someone to immerse themselves in the history of the East and South Tyrone areas and to add to their CV, particularly if they are interested in pursuing a career in heritage, archives, tour guiding or administration related posts.

Responsibilities

  • Be available to open Donaghmore Heritage Centre for public access for a minimum of 15 hours per week (or as agreed), and assist visitors with research queries both in person and on-line.
  • Provide administrative and other assistance to the committee of Donaghmore Historical Society - Filing, writing reports, dealing with queries, opening and closing the Heritage Centre, admitting and meeting visitors, setting up for meetings etc.
  • Fulfil book and other orders from the Centre as required.
  • Assist with and attend Society monthly meetings, including speaker liaison, marketing and publicity, physical set-up of the Heritage Centre, delivery of IT requirements.
  • Draw up, agree and implement a communications plan to promote the Historical Society and the Heritage Centre and local history.
  • Research and prepare short local history pieces for a variety of media, e.g websites, newspapers, PowerPoint, podcasts etc.
  • Carry out one in-depth local history research project related to the civil parish of Donaghmore and present it in the most appropriate format for the selected audience.
  • Management and delivery of Society projects as directed - including budget monitoring and control, delivery of key aspects, preparing progress and final reports for committee approval.
  • Identify funding opportunities and assist with preparation of applications.
  • Strengthen links with local and province wide organisations, such as other local history societies, bookshops, Council, umbrella history-related bodies both voluntary and statutory, arts organisations, museums, education, libraries etc.
  • Any other duty as requested to deliver the objectives and responsibilities of Donaghmore Historical Society.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Educated to degree level.
  • 5 GCSE's or equivalent (including English).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Able to work independently.

Desirable Skills

  • A demonstrable interest in history.
  • Experience in customer facing role.
  • Ability to use social media to promote events.
  • Experience in project management.
  • Familiarity with the key repositories for local historical resources.
