PICC Placemement Nurse


Job description

The post holder will be a member of the Southern Health and Social Care Trust Cancer Services PICC nursing team. The post holder will be responsible for inserting PICC’s and SACT administration for oncology and haematology patients. They will be expected to develop and promote the delivery of high quality, evidence based, person-centred care in relation to Venous Access Devices (VADs) and carrying out programmes of care ensuring that practice is in accordance with NMC Code of Professional Conduct and the Scope of Professional Practice. The post holder will work closely with the Unit Manager and the PICC service team to develop, deliver and evaluate the care given to patients requiring PICC’s. Responsibilities

  • Maintain own clinical competence and expertise in all aspects of VADs, intravenous therapy and SACT administration.
  • Undertake training and achieve competence in the insertion/maintenance of Peripheral Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs).
  • Assess, develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care relating to VADs and intravenous therapy.
  • Act as a resource to all staff on matters related to the speciality.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Registered Nurse on Part 1 of the live NMC Adult Register
  • Have three years post-registration experience within a oncology/haematology setting
  • Hold a relevant diploma / degree
  • Currently competent in the insertion of PICC’s or willing to undertake training to achieve competencies within a maximum 12 month period
  • Competent in Venepuncture, cannulation and IV drug administration
  • Hold a qualification in Oncology/Haematology at level 2/3 or have completed a course in the Administration of Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapies
  • Competence in Central Venous Access Device care and maintenance
  • Hold a current full driving licence which is valid for use in the UK and have access to a car on appointment.
