Oncology Nurse Practitioner (Band 7)


Job description

The main purpose of the role is to work in partnership with independent medical prescribers as a non-medical prescriber for patients within the Oncology service under supportive protocols and within the designated area of practice. Chemotherapy nurses, specialist nurses and oncology pharmacists will undertake reviews of patients receiving Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (SACT) when the patient does not require medical review. This will increase the flexibility of the SACT service and will help manage increasing workload. Patients within the Oncology service receiving anticancer medicines will remain under the care of consultant medical or clinical oncologist. Responsibilities

  • The post holder will have a pivotal role in the patient journey through oncology.
  • They will meet and assess the patient at their initial visit. They will facilitate the education of the patient in the administration and potential toxicities of SACT and will be involved in ensuring informed consent for SACT.
  • They will be able to assess patients receiving SACT for response and toxicities.
  • They will be able to prescribe SACT within protocols with adjustments to dose and supportive therapies according to patient related factors and toxicities.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Registered Nurse on Part 1 (adult) of the live NMC Register.
  • Specialist Practice Qualification (SPQ), cancer care oncology, or be willing to undertake and successfully complete within a timescale, as agreed by the Manager.
  • NMC recorded Non-medical prescribing qualification (v300) and actively prescribing.
  • Advanced Communication Training, or be willing to undertake and successfully complete, within a timescale, as agreed by the Manager.
  • 2 years band 6 experience within an oncology specialist unit / centre working with patients receiving SACT.

Location: Altnagelvin Hospital. Salary: £46,148 - £52,809 per annum pro rata.
