Trainee Facilities Assistant

THE EMPLOYER IS: BELFAST YMCA Individual responsible for supporting elements of the day-to-day presentation, readiness, and safe operation of Belfast YMCA’s Childcare and Youth & Community premises in Stranmillis through a mix of cleaning, facilities support, and practical assistance. The role is supervised, developmental, and additional, supporting core services. Vetting from the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust and an enhanced Access NI disclosure are required. Additional information -5% employer pension contribution. -Holidays of 31 days per year rising to 37 days per year (pro rata). -Death in service insurance and long service awards. -Staff discount on childcare and after-school services. -Participants will receive regular (at least monthly) reviews to discuss performance and improvement areas. -A mock interview will be offered at the end of the opportunity if permanent employment cannot be provided.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the day-to-day upkeep and presentation of rooms, communal areas, and facilities to ensure spaces are clean, welcoming and ready for use.
  • Support the set-up and clear-down of rooms for activities, programmes, and events.
  • Carry out routine visual checks of facilities and report maintenance or health & safety issues to the Facilities Officer.
  • Assist with waste management, recycling and replenishment of supplies across the building.
  • Day to day cleaning tasks such as floor surfaces, furniture, fixtures and fittings. Cleaning and stocking of sanitary areas. Spot cleaning of surfaces and glass within safe reach and responding to spillages / ad-hoc cleanliness issues as they arise.
  • Support a clean and hygienic environment alongside existing cleaning arrangements, without responsibility for specialist, deep or compliance cleaning.
  • Use cleaning materials and equipment safely and in line with training provided.
  • Report any faults, damage, or concerns relating to equipment or facilities.
  • Work cooperatively with facilities, childcare, youth and community staff. Maintain professional and respectful relationships with staff, service users and members of the public.
  • Support the Christian ethos and values of Belfast YMCA in day-to-day conduct.
  • Follow all health & safety and safeguarding procedure.
  • Maintain the security of premises and contents within own area of responsibility.
  • Participate in training, supervision, and development activities as part of the JobStart Scheme.
  • Undertake other reasonable facilities-related duties appropriate to the role and level of responsibility.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • A willingness to learn and take direction, with support and training provided.
  • Ability to turn up on time and complete agreed tasks.
  • Basic awareness of cleanliness and hygiene, with an understanding of why this is important in shared spaces.
  • Ability to follow simple instructions and health & safety guidance.
  • Good time management - ability to complete routine tasks within the working day.
  • Ability to work independently on set tasks as well as part of a wider team.
  • Basic communication skills - ability speaking politely with colleagues and members of the public.
  • Ability to carry out tasks including light lifting, standing, walking, bending and cleaning duties.
  • Comfortable using basic cleaning equipment and materials, with training provided.

Desirable Skills

  • Previous experience in a cleaning, caretaking, or facilities role.
  • Familiarity with or an interest in working within community, youth, or childcare environments.
  • Interest in building a working knowledge of health and safety compliance, such as COSHH and manual handling.
  • An interest in learning about site logistics and room configurations for events and programmes.
  • Willingness to develop basic administrative skills related to monitoring and replenishing stock levels.
  • The capacity to maintain a flexible working pattern, including early morning starts and alternating Saturdays.
