Retail Charity Shop Assistant
Job description
THE EMPLOYER IS: VIA WINGS To support the day-to-day running of the charity shop by delivering excellent customer service, assisting with sales, and helping to maximise income to support the charity’s mission. This role gives people hands-on experience in retail, customer service, and charity operations. The participant will help run Via Wings’ charity shop, gaining transferable skills in sales, merchandising, and team working, while supporting the charity’s mission to provide food and wrap-around services to those in need.
Responsibilities
- Welcome and assist customers in a friendly and professional manner.
- Provide information about the charity and its work.
- Handle customer queries and resolve issues politely and efficiently.
- Operate the till and handle cash, card, and other payment methods.
- Process refunds and exchanges in line with shop policy.
- Help achieve sales targets and maximise Gift Aid opportunities.
- Sort, steam, price, and display donated goods.
- Ensure stock is well-presented, clean, and attractively displayed.
- Receive and acknowledge donations from the public.
- Maintain cleanliness and tidiness of the shop floor and stockroom.
- Follow health and safety guidelines at all times.
- Ensure a safe environment for customers, volunteers, and staff.
- Work collaboratively with staff and volunteers.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Basic numeracy skills for cash handling.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Organised with good attention to detail.
Desirable Skills
- Knowledge of fashion brands or second-hand retail.
Further Information
The Employer is: VIA WINGS JobStart Opportunity - Working Hours Information, Standard Hours: up to 25 hours per week. Flexible/Reduced Hours: May be available upon approval by a Work Coach. Additional Hours: The employer may offer extra hours depending on availability. This should be discussed directly with the employer before starting employment.
