Workshop Operative
Job description
THE EMPLOYER IS: NORTH COAST STEEL A Workshop Operative provides general support within a workshop environment to ensure smooth daily operations. The role involves assisting tradespeople, preparing materials, maintaining equipment, and keeping the workspace safe, clean, and organized.
Responsibilities
- Assist welders, fabricators, and other tradespeople with daily tasks.
- Measure, cut, and prepare materials (including steel and other metals) as directed.
- Operate basic workshop tools and machinery such as saws, grinders, and drills.
- Load and unload materials, equipment, and finished products.
- Clean and maintain tools, machinery, and work areas to ensure safety and efficiency.
- Follow workplace health and safety procedures at all times.
- Assist with assembly and basic fabrication tasks under supervision.
- Conduct routine equipment checks and report faults or maintenance needs.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- Basic knowledge of workshop tools and equipment.
- Ability to follow instructions and read simple measurements or drawings.
- Good manual handling skills and physical fitness to carry out the role.
- Strong attention to safety procedures.
- Teamwork and communication skills.
Desirable Skills
- Previous experience in a workshop, manufacturing, or construction environment.
- Basic understanding of welding or fabrication processes.
- Ability to read and interpret simple technical drawings or job sheets.
