Equine Animal Worker
Job description
THE EMPLOYER IS: CROSSKENNAN LANE ANIMAL SANCTUARY Working with Equines at Crosskennan you will be caring for the horses, ponies and donkeys in the sanctuary and making their stay with us as happy, healthy, and as stress-free as possible. Nearly all our rescue equines typically have experienced some degree of trauma prior to arrival. Simply moving homes can be stressful for any animal, but many of our charges are also missing people or animals they loved, have come to us neglected, or even as victims of cruelty. For this reason, you will need to follow strict procedures and protocols. Equine workers assist with ensuring the health and well-being of horses, ponies, and donkeys in our care.
Responsibilities
- Stable Management: Mucking out, skipping out, replenishing bedding, and keeping the yard tidy.
- Daily Care: Feeding, watering, grooming, and applying or changing rugs.
- Health & Wellness: Monitoring for injuries or illness, treating minor wounds, and assisting vets or farriers.
- Tack & Equipment: Cleaning, maintaining, and preparing tack (saddles/bridles) for riding.
- Turnout: Bringing horses in and out of fields, checking fencing and water troughs.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- The health of the animals is of vital importance. You must be able to spot unexpected changes in the animal’s behaviour or physical injury to ensure these things are treated as soon as possible by staff or a vet if required.
- Be able to work in a team throughout the day to ensure the yard runs properly and be able to work with outside agents such as vets, farriers, dentists, suppliers and contractors.
Desirable Skills
- While previous experience working with Equines or other large animals is preferable, it is not essential.
