Trainee Audio Visual Engineer
Job description
THE EMPLOYER IS: BNL PRODUCTIONS LTD As a Trainee Audio Visual (AV) Engineer, you will help set up, operate, and look after sound, lighting, and video equipment for events. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys technology, problem-solving and hands-on work. You do not need previous AV experience - full training will be provided.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the setup, operation, and breakdown of audio, lighting, and video equipment for various events.
- Run cables, position microphones, set basic lighting, and prepare equipment according to event requirements.
- Support live event operations by monitoring audio levels and performing simple technical tasks under supervision.
- Aid in camera operation, including framing, basic filming, and capturing event footage as directed.
- Help troubleshoot and resolve minor technical issues, escalating more complex problems to senior engineers.
- Maintain equipment by ensuring it is clean, organised, and safely stored after use.
- Update equipment logs accurately and report any faults, damages, or missing items promptly.
- Assist with rehearsals and event-day activities, ensuring smooth technical execution and providing support to the event team.
- Perform basic post-production tasks such as transferring media, organising digital files, and preparing content for editing.
- Follow all health and safety procedures when handling equipment and working on event sites.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- Basic technical aptitude and an interest/knowledge in audio, lighting, or video equipment.
- Good communication skills for working effectively with colleagues, performers, and event staff.
- Able to learn and take instruction from senior engineers and supervisors.
- Be able to work handling cables, equipment setup, and logging inventory.
- Health and Safety awareness when working with electrical and technical equipment.
Desirable Skills
- Basic understanding of audio, lighting, or video concepts (e.g., microphones, cameras, signal flow).
- Previous experience assisting at events, productions, or technical setups - even in a volunteer or school environment.
- Familiarity with common AV software or tools (e.g., basic editing software, presentation software).
- Knowledge of cable management techniques and safe equipment handling.
- Ability to perform simple troubleshooting of technical issues.
- Experience using cameras, recording equipment, or basic lighting fixtures.
- Awareness of live event workflows and backstage procedures.
- Customer service or client-facing experience, especially in busy event settings.
- Ability to work independently when given clear instructions.
- A full UK driving licence (helpful for transporting equipment).
