Job description
Waterways Ireland wishes to recruit a temporary seasonal Waterway Patroller to principally carry out lock operations on the Lower Bann Navigation. The successful applicant will mainly provide assistance with the operation, maintenance and upkeep of the navigational locks on the Lower Bann over the summer period. The successful applicant may be required to work at a number of different locks and carry out a range of maintenance activities. Working hours will be varied to meet business need and will include evening and weekend work in line with the opening hours of the Lower Bann navigation.
Responsibilities
- Operation of lock gates and sluices to assist vessels moving through lock chambers.
- Assist with the taking and giving of ropes from and to boat users.
- Collection of fees and recording (if required) / maintaining boat register / log.
- Interface with the public on behalf of Waterways Ireland, when required.
- Assist with the maintenance of the area around the locks.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- Possess good communication skills.
Desirable Skills
- Have a CSR card or be willing to undertake training to obtain one
- Have knowledge or experience of lock operations
- Be aware of Health & Safety issues, in particular in a water-based environment.
- Have experience of working in a water-based environment.
- Have experience of operating craft in a working environment.
- Have experience of working with minimum supervision.
