Epilepsy Nurse
Job description
The post holder will work within the Neurology Epilepsy Service to develop the sodium valproate pathway in conjunction with Belfast trust and the public health agency. The post holder will provide a resource of specialist nursing knowledge and skills in the care and management of those affected by Epilepsy, their families and professionals working with them. The post holder will be responsible for co-ordinating the sodium valproate/Epilepsy MDT. Carry a caseload of patients within the Belfast trust and Northern trust patients under the care of a Belfast trust consultant, undertake comprehensive assessments with differential diagnoses and may prescribe care and treatment for patients with Epilepsy or appropriately refers to members of the multidisciplinary team within the hospital and community setting. Responsibilities
- The post holder will work closely with the Epilepsy Co-ordinator, multidisciplinary teams and other agencies and will be involved in developing and implementing effective approaches to meet the needs of this client group and their families.
- The post-holder will be expected to use clinical judgment and decision making in relation to the management of patients with Epilepsy.
- The post holder will be required to undertake nurse-led clinics in relation to the Epilepsy service.
- The post holder will initiate and participate in audit, research and development of the Epilepsy service working across the appropriate teams.
- The post holder will be an advocate for patients/carers with Epilepsy acting as a specialist resource for healthcare professionals involved with these patients.
Skills and Qualifications
Essential Skills
- Degree in Nursing or health related subject and 3 years’ experience working with people with neurological conditions OR
- Minimum of 4 years post registration experience including 2 year at Band 6 (or equivalent) working within an acute hospital or clinical setting.
- Hold an NMC recordable Independent & supplementary prescribing qualification ( V300) OR
- Undertake and successfully complete an NMC recordable Independent & supplementary prescribing qualification (V300), within a timescale agreed with the manager.
- Evidence of post-registration training to include Epilepsy.
- Evidence of on-going personal and professional development.
- Ability to influence and manage change, including the promotion of evidence based practice.
- Full UK Driving Licence with access to a car and willingness to travel throughout Northern Ireland to meet the needs of this service.
