Job description

The post holder will be a member of the Northern Trust Chemotherapy team in a clinical support role to the unit manager and the Macmillan Clinical Educator. The nurse is responsible for the assessment of and delivery of person centred care including the development, implementation and evaluation of care for patients who are attending the department for Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapies (SACT) and/or supportive therapies associated with treatment. The post holder will also ensure that practice is in accordance with NMC Code of Professional Conduct and the Scope of Professional Practice as well as relevant policies, protocols and guidelines. The post holder will work closely with the unit manager and the Macmillan Clinical Educator to develop, deliver and evaluate training and education for staff (both qualified and unqualified) delivering care to oncology and haematology patients. Responsibilities

  • Participate in and contribute to the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of person centred care
  • Communicates complex, sensitive information with colleagues, patients and carers often in difficult situations
  • Complete assessments of new patients to identify psychological, emotional, spiritual and cultural needs in relation to their illness and treatment including toxicity assessments
  • Administer SACT and other supportive treatments safely and competently as part of the nursing team to oncology and haematology patients

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Successful completion of a recognised course in the administration of systemic anti-cancer treatment
  • Currently skilled and competent in the administration of chemotherapy to oncology and/or haematology patients
  • Currently a Registered Nurse on Part 1 of the live NMC register
  • 2 years nursing experience at Band 5 within an Oncology or Haematology care setting
  • Currently skilled and competent with IV cannulation and IV drug administration
  • Experience in the management of Central Venous Access Devices
  • Experience in taking responsibility in the clinical area.
