Business Development Manager


Job description

The Business Development Manager is responsible for Phoenix Energy’s sales and customer engagement strategy, maximising connection growth across domestic and business properties and supporting existing customers future energy needs. This is a cross-sector role that requires tailored strategies across relevant sectors (including domestic, business and public sector end users). Strategies must align with company and regulatory targets and meet high standards of business and regulatory compliance. The Business Development Manager will lead a team of colleagues who support departmental delivery. The role requires a strong track record of leading high-performing teams, thriving in a target-based environment and making effective, data-informed decisions. In addition to developing sales growth strategies, the post holder will support existing customer needs in a way that recognises the evolving energy landscape in NI, increasing demand for low-carbon solutions and the role renewable gas solutions will play regionally.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and manage a sales strategy for each growth sector to meet annual company and regulatory targets.
  • Engage proactively with existing customer groups to help shape and inform current & future energy needs, while providing insights on consumer behaviours, market trends and emerging technologies including Large Energy Users, NIHE, Housing Association.
  • Work closely with Marketing and Communications colleagues to inform brand development and lead-generation activity (including connection incentive campaigns).
  • Lead, coach and develop a highly motivated team of departmental leads who support wider company objectives.
  • Promote a collaborative culture across the department, while recognising individual responsibilities, to ensure effective support during periods of peak workload.
  • Support delivery of domestic, government-funded energy support schemes (e.g., the NI Sustainable Energy Programme), including funding applications, partner relationships, compliance and budget tracking.
  • Represent Phoenix Energy at external events and meetings that influence performance in each sector, developing new relationships and sustaining existing relationships with key stakeholders.
  • Support delivery of a comprehensive trade strategy to ensure effective engagement with the wider industry and support Phoenix Energy’s objectives in the transition to net zero

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • At least 3 years’ experience managing a team and reporting to senior management.
  • Experience managing a complaint resolution process.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present clearly and build trust with clients and stakeholders.
  • Ability to negotiate mutually beneficial outcomes, handle objections and deliver timely results.
  • Ability to build a strong network of contacts and nurture long-term partnerships.
  • Ability to analyse market trends, research data and competitor activity to identify and prioritise growth opportunities.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience working within an energy or regulated industry.
