Pop-up Shop Lead


Job description

To manage all aspects of the Derry Castle Street Pop Up Shop, including leading and supporting volunteers, maximising income generation and ensuring an excellent customer and donor experience. As this is a newly established pop-up shop, the post holder will play a key role in setting up, developing and embedding the shop within the local community during its first year of operation. This includes building volunteer capacity, developing donation streams, establishing effective shop systems and contributing to the evaluation of the pop-up model to inform future retail development. The post holder will act as an ambassador for Concern Worldwide, ensuring the shop becomes a welcoming, sustainable and successful community retail space that supports Concern’s mission and raises awareness of its work and campaigns.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day shop operations to achieve income targets and deliver strong retail performance against agreed KPIs.
  • Create a positive, creative and entrepreneurial shop environment that maximises income opportunities.
  • Develop and establish local initiatives and partnerships to grow donations, customer engagement and community support.
  • Monitor shop performance and provide weekly updates to the Retail Development Manager.
  • Recruit, develop and retain a diverse volunteer team to maximise shop income and support long-term sustainability.
  • Plan and maintain an effective volunteer rota to support efficient shop operations and maximise opening hours.
  • Deliver training, supervision and ongoing support to volunteers, fostering a positive and inclusive environment.
  • Lead and motivate the volunteer team to deliver an excellent customer and donor experience.
  • Support and empower volunteers to promote retail initiatives, seasonal activities and organisational appeals and campaigns.
  • Recognise and celebrate volunteer contribution in line with organisational values and good volunteer management practice.
  • Maintain high standards of shop cleanliness, presentation and visual merchandising, including shop windows and displays.
  • Establish effective stock processing systems including sorting, pricing, quality control and stock flow.
  • Develop stock donation initiatives and local collection opportunities to ensure consistent supply of quality stock.
  • Ensure effective cash handling, till procedures and stock security processes are followed at all times.
  • Ensure volunteers are trained in all shop policies and procedures and that training records remain up to date.
  • Maintain a safe, healthy and compliant working environment, escalating issues where appropriate.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory requirements relating to donated goods and retail operations.
  • Complete required retail reporting and administrative duties accurately and on time.
  • Strengthen community ties and raise brand awareness for the shop helping build a network of local supporters.
  • Build relationships with local organisations, businesses and community groups to increase donations, volunteer recruitment and community engagement.
  • Capture and communicate key learnings from the pop up shop to support future retail development across Northern Ireland.
  • Support the shop team in representing Concern and increasing awareness of Concern’s work locally.
  • Encourage integration of the shop within the community through volunteer engagement and local activity.
  • This role requires a hands on approach to shop management, including manual handling and day to day retail tasks. A reasonable level of fitness is required.

Skills and Qualifications

Essential Skills

  • Experience working in a retail or customer facing environment.
  • Experience supporting the setup, development or growth of a retail, community or social enterprise initiative.
  • Experience organising priorities and working effectively within a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Experience supervising or coordinating people within a retail, hospitality, charity or customer-focused environment.
  • Experience supporting the day to day running of a shop, store or customer focused operation.
  • Experience contributing to sales performance, income generation or achievement of target.
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and work independently within a busy operational environment.
  • Applications are welcomed from candidates with experience in retail, hospitality, community projects, social enterprise or other customer focused environments who can demonstrate transferable skills and motivation to succeed in charity retail.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage confidently with colleagues, volunteers, donors and customers.
  • Organised and proactive approach with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Commercial awareness and an understanding of how good retail practice drives income.
  • Ability to work in a practical, hands on retail environment while contributing ideas to grow and develop the shop.
  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills suitable for retail administration, cash handling and reporting.
  • Confidence using IT systems including email and Microsoft Office applications. Training will be provided where required.
  • Awareness of social media or willingness to use digital channels to support shop promotion and volunteer engagement.
  • Ability to build positive relationships and engage effectively with local communities and stakeholders.
  • Flexible approach to working hours, including weekends and Bank Holidays.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience managing or supervising within charity retail or commercial retail.
  • Experience opening, developing or growing a retail or community initiative.
  • Experience recruiting, managing or supporting volunteers.
